Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

Post by kcjak »

The article mentions that the group didn't want the images released to the public because they needed 'refinement' so hopefully there is still some room for improvement, like for full length awnings. Also, bench seating for streetcars only faces east - should be staggered between NB and SB streetcars.

Full length awning with 2 full length benches back to back would be simple and effective. Same for bus stop with one long bench.

However if they don't do that in other parts of metro it's a custom solution requiring custom maintenance. That might be the thinking of using standard stop shelters in a row.

Let's say that's the main reason. They could put six of them in place, tighter together.

1 continuous line of benches divides the platform.

I agree that the awnings should be extended if possible (similar to a traditional LR station) but there is probably enough seating already. Benches take the places of multiple standing passengers and most passengers won’t be waiting that long for a train.

One long bench thing would be annoying. One long awning with breaks in it to go between would be nice.

He used an old map. It's 31st. The article has been corrected.

Streetcar Authority Reveals Concepts for New Stops on Main, CC Plaza

Ditch the glass roof design on the stops. I don't understand why anyone would force people to sit in the hot sun on a 100 degree day without proper shade.

That stop should have a Spanish look. Red Tile Roof. Smooth concrete archways holding it up. Think LA Union Station.

Why? It's not on the Plaza and there's multiple buildings equally far away without a Spanish look.

Branding consistency. A rider always can look for the same stop in the same colors. Don’t underestimate the value of this for a new rider.

So for the plaza stop, northbound has a dedicated bus lane and shelters. What about southbound?

At the Plaza stop, both lanes of the streetcar and the dedicated bus lanes will be on the east side of Main in a transit plaza. It shows that in the rendering if you take another look.

My question is where will the UMKC stop be? Does it move to the Wiggings trail, in the old ROW, at that point?

There's a video of the streetcar running from Union Station south to UMKC on the KCStreetcar Main St Extension page as well...

What's going on with the trail crossing the street at Westport Rd?
