I think doing something like this with the empty pedestal in the south facade of the station would be cool. Maybe the Nelson could get involved?

A quality idea. You should submit it to their staff.

They created this exhibit themselves. If it does well, they'll set it out on tour. Should be a big money maker!

Grimy, Glorious, Gone. The Divergent Paths of 7 Train Stations

We traveled to seven rail depots in the nation’s middle. The stations, some remade and others crumbling, reflect the trajectories of their towns.

Rescued from the edge

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — If ever there was a model of a decaying station brought back to vibrancy, it would be in Kansas City.

Singers film music videos in Union Station’s Grand Plaza. Travelers board Amtrak trains bound for Los Angeles or St. Louis. Schoolchildren arrive by the busload to tour its science museum. And the building, the country’s largest train station outside New York when it opened, has been at the center of a renaissance in Kansas City’s formerly barren downtown.

New Museum of Illusions at Union Station uses mirrors to mess with your mind
...
A Museum of Illusions, a permanent installation opening Friday, plays with visual and sensory perceptions. You see things that aren’t there. You don’t see things that are there. Objects appear to be flat until they suddenly reveal themselves to be dimensional.

You can be a giant or a tiny person standing in a corner or on a chair. Your head can appear, minus your body, in the middle of a platter of fruit on a table.

Train exhibit to get a makeover. Closed for ~3 months

https://www.unionstation.org/news/popul ... ign=buffer
expanded space to provide a better walking flow will be incorporated. A new office and workshop will be added for the wonderful volunteers who maintain the exhibits. And a permanent interior walkway will be built to offer greater guest convenience during events held in Union Station’s Grand Plaza

Excellent! I assume this means they will be able to secure the area in off hours. Really surprised there wasn't more theft or vandalism with the current layout.

Union Station Adding Soaring Sculpture to Downtown Skyline

Union Station is adding a shape-shifting display of magic to the downtown skyline this summer with a huge floating sculpture described as jaw-dropping by one observer who knows a bit about art.

“When you see this sculpture fly, you’ll believe in magic,” said Tony Jones, the president of the Kansas City Art Institute, who saw a similar work by the artist in downtown Los Angeles.

The silvery sculpture, titled “Reflecting Motion,” is a canopy of 78,000 iridescent streamers woven by 13,400 feet of rope and covering an area the size of two basketball courts.

It will undulate on the breeze from 18 feet to 72 feet above the Haverty Family Yards on the north side of Union Station and be visible from I-35, the streetcar and the Crossroads Art District.

Union Station commissions largest air art installation in KC's history
Union Station Kansas City is celebrating the completion of its $8.4 million western expansion project in a big way: a six-figure art installation that spans about 40,000 square feet – almost the length of a regulation football field.

"It's kind of mind-boggling that it will be the largest air art installation in Kansas City's history," Union Station CEO George Guastello told the Kansas City Business Journal.

Stonehenge Dropping at Union Station, Follows Big Dinosaur Success
Union Station is going back in time again for its next major exhibition, although not as far as its hugely successful “Dinosaurs Revealed!” show that closed last weekend after attracting 165,000 visitors.

“Stonehenge: Ancient Mysteries and Modern Discoveries” will explore the massive and mystical stone structure built beginning 5,000 years ago in the English countryside that has fascinated people for centuries.

The monument, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1986, consists of several rings of standing stones, the largest around 23 feet high, and weighing up to 25 tons each.
