Isn't the NE Corner of 39th and Rainbow that giant KU Med construction project?

Yep State Line. We tried it once, not long after it opened and it was fine. Not a lot of ambience and surrounded by a lot of food elsewhere.

Re: wtf is happening to w. 39th?!
The neighbors are all worked about an application for a liquor license for a new bar on W 39th in the location that was most recently a thrift store - small building on the SW corner of 39th/Mercier). Apparently the business would build a deck in the back, have yard games and a large outside space. One neighbor on the Neighbor app says they don't want any more bars because 39th will turn into Westport and there will be shootings.
I can understand not wanting to live directly next to a place where there will be noise and music til 1:30 every night (although since it's not my house, I'm all for it!), but let's be reasonable.

People really need to better understand the difference between correlation and causation.

Meatball District has reopened, but Sultan's has closed, which makes me very sad. They'd branched out from their delicious pastries into shwarma and falafel, both of which were quite good.

Rumor is that The Farmhouse (RM resto) is opening a second location somewhere on 39th street.

Can't wait! With all of the closings recently, this type of business is sorely needed.KCtonic wrote:That is no longer a rumorkboish wrote:Rumor is that The Farmhouse (RM resto) is opening a second location somewhere on 39th street.

Missouri is awesome. We love going whenever we get the chance. We've been in a rut the last few months since The Mission Taco Joint opened a KC location in the Crossroads. They serve food until 11:15, so we usually get there around 10:30 or so and have some jam band, shrimp and mushroom tacos.dangerboy wrote:Actually 39th Street is lousy with JO license plates. On a weekend night easily half of the cars are from Joco. It's a mostly non-threatening way for them to go into "the city" for dinner without going very far into scary Missouri.KCMax wrote: I'd guess there are more than enough people in KCK/Midtown/Downtown/Plaza/Brookside to patronize 39th street that not much of the 39th street clientele hails from Olathe or Blue Springs.
Sarcasm side, 39th Street draws from all over the metro, including Blue Springs and Olathe. It's a regional dining destination.
The cocktails are good and so are the local brews. I'm addicted to (pardon me if I spell incorrectly) Cervais Grande.

It looks like a Panera is going into the former market space in the West 39th St Apartments building.

W39th only has a couple national chains - Starbucks and Chipotle. Was just a matter of time more moved in. Will the neighborhood welcome another chain or hardcore locatarian? At least it's a doable one.

I think the locals won't be happy about a chain, but I bet it will still do good business, drawing from KU Med.
When that Chipotle opened, it was the first one outside of Colorado, so it was barely a chain at that time.

The locals on the neighborhood association page haven't been happy with a chain coming in, but quite a few people said that IF a chain came it, they wouldn't mind Panera too much since it offers clean food and all that. I'm glad to see something nice go in that location - they should do great with the hospital crowd.

I think a Panera makes sense there. Seems like there's enough turnover on 39th that nothing local is being sacrificed.
It's not my cup of tea, but it should be pretty popular that close to KU Med (as mentioned).

Black Sheep is now open in the old Cafe Allegro/Thomas/Aep place. The restaurant opened today and they also have a market in there in the space to the west that has ben open for a couple weeks and sells local produce, Ibis bread and other foodstuffs, I believe all from their suppliers for the restaurant. This is the same group that recently partnered with the Farmhouse (River Market). I don't think the deck will be open until the spring.

I'm looking forward to checking this place out.
However, their online presence (website and facebook page) appear to be designed to keep visitors away from their restaurant. Are they doing a soft opening and afraid of too many people showing up?
