This will be an interesting test to see if KC really has any clout in Smart City space, that is if the 'living lab' draws outsiders setting up base here or not. Not sure how many would be considered a success/failure but if a dozen in a year or so that would be great. A bunch of local startups would be great too but it will be outsider attraction as a good litmus test to KC's clout in industry as a whole.DaveKCMO wrote:Smart City update: Living Lab set to launch, TV show may highlight KC innovation

I saw that, bummer. I assume Seattle was a better deal for many reasons....innovation, urban living, etc.DaveKCMO wrote:one of the two staff members in KCMO's office of innovation is leaving this week to be the smart city coordinator for the city of seattle.

Avis selects KC to test connected cars. Could lead to self-driving cars...
edit: The press release implies Avis has opened a Mobility Lab office in KC...
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-avis ... SKBN1DU0IEA “connected car” is linked wirelessly to the internet, other vehicles and, in Avis’ case, to a centralized network, which the company said will enable it to automate many processes that are currently performed manually.
Connected cars allow Avis customers to manage their entire rental through an app, including locking and unlocking car doors via smartphone or honking the vehicle’s horn when they cannot locate their car.
In June, Waymo, [Google] Alphabet Inc’s self-driving car unit, signed a multi-year agreement for Avis to manage its growing autonomous vehicle fleet.
edit: The press release implies Avis has opened a Mobility Lab office in KC...
https://globenewswire.com/news-release/ ... -City.html“Our Mobility Lab in the greater Kansas City area extends our next-generation mobility initiatives,” said Larry De Shon, president and chief executive officer, Avis Budget Group. “The steps we’re taking with connected car and smart technologies will increase customer satisfaction as well as reduce operational costs in the near term, while also preparing us to meet the evolving needs of consumers, entrepreneurs, corporations and governments, like the City of Kansas City, a recognized global leader for its Smart City advancements.”

Smart City Pioneers: Where Are They Now?
http://www.govtech.com/dc/articles/GT-D ... y-Now.html
It was mentioned a while back that KC would be adding more kiosks as they are profitable. I think some are along new Prospect MAX line. Anywhere else?Smart city projects in Atlanta, Chicago and Kansas City, Mo., were early efforts at the Internet of Things, analytics and other connected tech. Here's what they're up to today.
Kansas City, Mo., was at the forefront of smart city tech in 2015, embracing expanded broadband access, smart streetcars with video sensors capable of finding badly parked cars, traffic lights to keep streets moving, and digital kiosks serving as city guides.
Expansion also continues with the city’s smart streetlight plan, which is set to grow to 7,200 units. Other growth has taken place with public Wi-Fi and traffic cameras, which now collect data from all main thoroughfares connecting highways to city streets. The city is also using sensors to direct water during storms, and, like Atlanta, to predict potholes. Bennett said results have been fantastic for government efficiency, even if the average Kansas City resident is unaware.

Re: Smart City Project
City issues RFP, but decides not to select any partners. Good to see them taking a more pragmatic view of what it means to be a Smart City.

Re: Smart City Project
KC's international clout in the Smart City space has been raised. Four KC reps (of 14) have been selected as leaders for a global think tank and advisory council on Smart Cities and IoT (Internet of Things), more than other cities. Re: Smart City Project
The current Smart City efforts are on a "strategic pause", although "Smart City 2.0" implementation of interactive kiosks, public Wi-Fi, assisted wayfinding for the visually impaired, and conductive concrete snowmelt system will be complete on Prospect this year.
Expect more focus on solving issues with tech rather than implementing tech and hoping a use case materializes.

Re: Smart City Project
Yeah, I wondered too with new mayor/council. But good to hear that city will still be involved on the solutions side, not the riskier experimental side. There's still momentum in private space despite what KCMO sponsors.

That makes him the second ex-CIO to launch one in KC. Maybe we will see more smart city consulting and tech jobs based out of the area in the future.earthling wrote: ↑Sun Aug 11, 2019 11:04 am Yeah, I wondered too with new mayor/council.
