Sure wish the streetlights and kiosks worked like Sly said they did just now.

Re: Smart City Project
The winner of US DOT Smart City challenge should be announced by next week. This highlights what each city is proposing...

$90M in local matching funds probably helped Columbus. And having a large university doesn't hurt. KC's biggest hurdle is possibly lack of major research university.

That last part is ironic since this was about implementing technology. As if universities from around the world can't be consulted with for matters around technology using technology.earthling wrote:$90M in local matching funds probably helped Columbus. API available from ride kc I believe I saw. The problem with the tracking appears to be between streetcar data and how the vendor system (trapeze) is handling that data.... So the API data it publishes is still going to be junk.

again, not exclusive to streetcar. same back-end as the MAX routes.KCPowercat wrote:API available from ride kc I believe I saw. to be fair, accurate real time GPS-based data in an urban environment is way more complex than you think.KCPowercat wrote:not arguing with that....seems like a pretty horrible vendor.
Especially when people expect accuracy to well under a minute on a scale that has the vehicle less than 5 minutes away.
At 20mph and distances measuring in fractions of a minute to clear there's almost no room for error.

Re: Smart City Project
I don't ride the streetcar often enough to notice but I haven't seen a huge margin of error with the bus system. Google Maps have been pretty accurate and if bus is behind schedule, GMaps updates with the latest GPS info and shows a new time within a few minutes. The more traffic/streetlights to deal with, I would expect a little bit higher margin of error but seems to be reasonable to me.
The APIs are obviously there given Google Maps and other transit apps have access to it.

Re: Smart City Project
kids: all of the real-time data is from the same source -- bus and streetcar -- and that system is what's having issues. and those issues aren't new.

Re: Smart City Project
Lol at that infographic . These things can't even turn a walk signal on properly and the streetcar is still stopped for no cross traffic ...much less doing those other things....I've never been so unimpressed with smart technology. It literally has made the pedestrian experience like it was 10 years ago when we were fighting for auto ped signals.

Re: Smart City Project
They seem to have the data collection down but still figuring out how to integrate the data into something useful. KC is willing to be a beta tester to this new 'Civil IoT' industry, expect a lot of experimentation that may not be useful for a while. Was similar with Google Fiber as a 1.0 product. KC was first to use it and work the kinks out, mostly on the TV side.

Re: Smart City Project
saw a demo of the dimming LED lights on main street the other night. the lights they installed are brighter than the ones they replaced (exceeding the minimums at 100%) but use half the power. got to see the current brightness cut to 35%, 50%, and 65%. they don't have the "app" yet to automatically dim them when there's no movement below.
