Tiki Lounges in Kansas City

Post by FangKC »

I found a blog that gives some history and photos of five Tiki lounges: the Tropics Lounge in the Phillips Hotel; the Castaways near 45th and Main; Kon Tiki near 32nd and Main (where McDonalds is now); the Kona Kai lounge near the Plaza (in the Holiday Inn on Main); and the Bali Hai lounge in the former Bretton's space, where One Kansas City Place is now.

Ahhh, too many mai tai's at the Kona Kai. Glad somebody rescued Orsen Wells. That was the name given the eight foot god of debauchery. He has great powers.

Two of those became gay bars. Castaways became the Dover Fox and Kon Tiki became the worlds only Polynesian leather bar.

someone should pass along this idea to the folks creating the "gay nightlife strip mall" on broadway. could be due for a re-boot!

I wonder if there is a former Tiki bar sealed up somewhere -- lost in time -- sort of like the Cosby Hotel was. :D

What was the name of the bar or restaurant that was located in the Crown Center Hotel years ago, located just off the lobby? Didn't that have Tiki theme?

OK, some young local Turk needs to bring back the Tiki Lounge. Where do we put it? The Hamburger Mary's space?

What about the Bamboo Hut on 40 Highway. It's kind of a Tiki-Bar. At least it looked like one the last time I was in there.

Wonder if it's still open?

Just messaged a friend who owns a restaurant or two in town if he knows of any Tiki Bars in K.C. He said no, but that a friend just opened one up in Jeff City. Here's a link to it's FB page.

link from Jeff City paper. http://www.newstribune.com/news/2013/ju ... ming-town/

one more link. you have to scroll down a little to find the story on it. http://jeffersoncitymag.com/2013/09/downtown-evolution/

I forgot about the Bamboo Hut. I recall when it was still open. Does anyone know if something ever opened in that space?

The old Grille on Broadway space would be perfect.

How 'bout a Tiki Bar in the new Screenland space on 17th & McGee. That would be a great spot for one.

Joe, that is a good idea. Email Butch Rigby and suggest it.
