Sure, I say go for it. Would definitely be cool if it was a low key spot to relax and take in the view, though I would prefer the owner spend this money on making the Cashew a better place than expanding it. The Cashew could be so great if only the food was better, more beer options, and cheaper prices. That second floor bar is already a great space with awesome views.

I found that nimby in the article to be quite humorous. How in the hell are you going to move into an urban, downtown neighborhood surrounded by bars and businesses and then say that it is a residential neighborhood and they shouldn't exist. Why, because you live there? Of course that is exactly the ego I expect from an executive chef. No big surprise.
You know, ever since The Cashew opened, the owner at the time, who either moved on or died I think, bitched and bitched and bitched that the in-use-at-the-time rail spur behind his place prevented him from having a real kitchen because he could not get a permit to install vents or whatever because of the spur and because the land is/was owned by KC Southern, and as any railroad people or rail aficionado's know, railroads have almost 100% ironclad ownership of their right-of-ways and land around tracks and go to great lengths to enforce it. Even if they don't use the tracks anymore.

When the Star moved to their new production facility, KC Southern no longer used the tracks and I believe that the line was removed and paved over awhile back at 20th St. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

The Star move was in 2007. And still no regular kitchen at the Cashew.

As any bar manager/owner knows, kitchen business makes good money, but not as much as the bar business does. With a markup of sometimes 400% on liquor in some places, you can make way more money selling booze, than food and hire less employees who work for tips and and an incredibly lower hourly wage, than what you have to pay kitchen help.

If you also factor in the cost and maintenance of kitchen equipment, the cost of cleaning supplies and the much lower food markup, it just makes sense to maybe, be like The Drop or The Cashew. Promote your place as a drinking destination, not a restaurant, but also give folks a mini-option on food, so they don't just have one or two drinks and leave and go to a place like Anton's or La Bodega, where they can get great food and drinks in one place.

I've always thought The Cashew was kinda snooty and overpriced, but then again most of my favorite joints are either dive bars or sports bars, so my opinion of it doesn't mean much and I am clearly not in the demographic they're targeting. I laughed at their prices on beers and drinks.

Anyway, if I want to go to a classy joint with great food, great beer, great wine and great employees, I'll just go to Anton's. On the ++side, The owner of Anton's is not a prick. Like I found the Cashew's owner to be at the times I was there, but that was long ago. I have no clue what it's like these days. I don't find any value in wasting my time there.

Oh yeah Joe, I'm pretty sure it's still the same way. I have a friend who worked there for a couple years, up until a few months ago, and she said that the owner was a prick. Nobody really liked the guy. The look of the place and the location are what that place has going for it. But it's super snooty. And the prices are no good.

From what I hear, employees have given the owner tons of ideas on how to improve the place, but he has no interest in doing so. He just wants a place where he feels comfortable drinking himself. And this is apparently how he likes it. No doubt he is pulling in plenty of dough too, so he probably has no real need to change it up. I just wish he would, because then I would be more likely to stop in. As you said though, I would rather go to Anton's or Grunaur if I'm in the neighborhood. I'm much more interested in dive bars as well. The Crossroads really needs a dirty, hole-in-the-wall dive bar. Something like the Zoo or Caddyshack. When I lived down there that is what I was always missing. All the bars are big and spacious, and mostly kinda fancy.

Nah, none of those are what I'm looking for. Notice none of those bars have pool tables. That is essential for a dive.

Now, the Brick used to be pretty divey, even without the pool table. It's way too well lit and classy now though. I don't like what happened.

wow. so many levels of dive. i had no idea. i'm pretty much your worst nightmare for a neighbor since i enable all the classy, yet dim, places w/o pool tables.

Hey hey man, I have no problem with the classy places. I do like them some of the time. But yea there are so many levels of dive haha! I am just saying it would be nice for the Crossroads to have a dirty dive bar or two. A place to play pool or darts while drinking cheap beer. Not dressed to impress. Like I said earlier, a place like the Zoo. It would make for a nice diversity of bars.

the rail for that block is still there and likely still owned by the railroad

I opened a 311 ticket this year on 19th or 20th because it was noticeably "jumping" when people drove over it. the city's comment was the railroad would have to fix it

Crossroads won't have a dive anytme soon- the conditions of a true dive take time to, hmm- mature?
The terminology is of the 'know when I see it' kind.

The nearest thing the Crossroads has to a dive, YJ's Snack Bar, was robbed this afternoon. My source is a Facebook post.
Maybe after you hit the soft-loft bars, sober up with a breakfast sandwich and help 'em out this weekend, downtowners

I never said I thought Grinders was classy. It just definitely isn't a dive. And yea, the Brick is reasonably classy don't you think :D. But really, I'm just saying it isn't as much of a hole as it used to be. It seems that they have tried to fit in with the Crossroads vibe the last few years, making it nicer for tourists and weekend urban folk.

And what is this PR's Place?!? This sounds intriguing. Sorry Chingon, secrets out!
