Re: Johnson County Transit (The JO)
groundbreaking is tomorrow morning (wednesday, july 18) at 8:30 for the jo's new tiger-funded transit center at 5251 johnson drive in mission. if the service cuts go through, the transit center will open next year with 70 percent fewer routes and 30 percent less service.

Re: Johnson County Transit (The JO)
the JO received part of a TIGER I grant, which required no local match. they're just now breaking ground on part of that investment. same for KCK's transit centers. streetcar applied for TIGER IV and was rejected for no local funding. the program evolved a few times in its short lifespan and requiring a local match was one of the changes.
regardless, johnson county transit will soon be decimated by additional cuts. will be interesting to see what they salvage in the metcalf corridor. technically, the feds can revoke funding if they don't feel it's been put to good use.

The JO is a joke. What will they do have 400 riders a day vs 1200?DaveKCMO wrote:the JO received part of a TIGER I grant, which required no local match. they're just now breaking ground on part of that investment. same for KCK's transit centers. streetcar applied for TIGER IV and was rejected for no local funding. the program evolved a few times in its short lifespan and requiring a local match was one of the changes.

Re: New Bus Service on K-10
I thought I saw a segment on the news that said Lawrence is considering an overnight (after 8pm) bus service on K-10 that would be appointment only. Anyone hear about that?

given the recent planned cuts to the Jo in general I thought this was pertinent

Re: Johnson County Transit (The JO)
a pro-transit moderate (steve klika) was elected to the johnson county commission last night. while cuts were approved recently and take effect in january, at least the tea party balance has been tipped a little bit.

once the recession is a memory, they need to put forward a small transit tax for voter approval. if it passes, keep or expand the system to make it useful. if it fails, end the whole thing and quit pretending they care.

Re: Johnson County Transit (The JO)
I don't really get the Mission Transit Center location. Was the idea that there's parking there so you can leave your car and take the bus? Because I rarely see pedestrians in that area.
Seems counterintuitive to have a big bus stop that people aren't going to walk to.

Re: Johnson County Transit (The JO)
There's a big transit station currently on the corner of Lamar and Martway, and that's what is being replaced. There's no pedestrian traffic there either. They're hoping it encourages pedestrian activity, in combination with the Gateway, whenever it gets built, and other pedestrian friendly improvements in the area, like the Rock Creek Trail.

Looks like they are really improving the Metcalf bike lane in conjunction with adding new transit stops.

Re: Johnson County Transit (The JO)

The changes to Johnson County's transit system are part of a slow play toward what transit activists hope will result in a much larger, multimodal transit network. Moving in that direction will require more money. That could come in the form of higher funding commitments from local counties.
"That's part of the master plan, to get moving in that direction," Klika says.
It could also mean a bistate tax. The first such tax, for Union Station, passed almost 20 years ago. But operating losses on the refurbished station blew through a $40 million endowment, and Science City didn't draw promised crowds — outcomes that soured Johnson Countians on future big ideas. A second bistate initiative, for pro sports stadiums and arts, failed.

public meeting about downtown routing changes: http://www.jocogov.org/dept/transit-jo/ ... 10/16/6038
A plan for realigning Johnson County routes in downtown has been drafted. We are asking riders and the public for feedback. The plan’s goals are:
- Make the downtown portion of the routes easier to understand for current and prospective riders.
- Provide better connections to KCATA service along 12th Street and Grand Boulevard.
- Maintain connections to upcoming KC Streetcar service on Main Street.
- Create more evenly spaced schedules, with trips timed every 30 or 60 minutes during peak hours and coordinated to better match typical work start and end times.
