New KC Crime Lab/East Patrol HQ
Anyone have thoughts on the proposed to Crime Lab/East Patrol HQ?
http://www.kctv5.com/story/15411191/res ... -crime-lab
It rubs me the wrong way, but I can't convey exactly why. Part of it, I think, is because they are taking a four block area in a depressed but not dead area, thus killing it. The other part is that eminent domain simply rubs me wrong any more. Oh, and the police irritate me sometimes.

I expected this response. At least P&L was under the auspices of development in a targeted area. This just seems like it could be built anywhere. Perhaps a surface parking lot along 18th?aknowledgeableperson wrote:Like the old P&L neighborhood.smh wrote:It rubs me the wrong way, but I can't convey exactly why. As much as I'm not a huge fan of razing a bunch of houses for this using eminent domain, the reality is that if there is any part of KCMO that could use a police station full of cops, it's right around that area.

No area around here with more abandonded housing? Seems we could kill two birds with one stone....and not kick out people that actually want to keep their homes.
This situation is much more like the racetrack than p&l....nobody lived (or worked) in the p&l zone.

Re: New KC Crime Lab/East Patrol HQ
yeah i don't understand this at all. there are enormous tracts of empty land all over the urban core - why knock down people's homes? people are already leery of the police in many neighborhoods, and i don't think this will help matters much.

There appears to be many vacant lots in the area selected. Wonder how many are in Land Trust? And for the houses that are there how many are actually occupied? And I doubt that there is a "vacant" four block area in the core so there is always be some relocation.
Justrite Rubber and American Formal come to mind.....nobody ... (or worked) in the p&l zone.

I'd be curious to hear how many occupied homes were knocked down.

Given the size of the project I am sure that occupied houses would be torn down no matter where the project is built.
But, of course, let's break the number down to "owner occupied" vs "rental".

It is not so much the eminent domain (though I am not much of a fan of it) part that gets me, and I can see the need for a new crime lab and HQ in that area; it is the hideous amount of land seemingly taken up that is not devoted to building space.

Rubber was in Sprint Center space....but definitely should have dropped the plan due to a tux rental shop....yet you have no problem kicking people out of their homes for a racetrack or police station. Re: New KC Crime Lab/East Patrol HQ
At one time there were two apartment buildings north of city hall. One stood where the park is now (which I think was torn down directly for the park), the other where the Dunn building is (which was torn down for 'future' development). Other buildings existed downtown that were taken down for business development that had people living in them. And, although it was crazy, an untold number of houses and apartments were taken down for KCMOSD schools for their improvements in the 80's.
Tearing down living units is quite common. Of course you haven't identified another suitable spot for the development have you?
Of course, you earlier stated there was no business in the P&L area. And there was at least one so you statement was incorrect. And instead of saying so you come back with your latest that the business didn't matter. Just like a politician.

Re: New KC Crime Lab/East Patrol HQ
actually I said nobody lived there....I'm not big on kicking people out of their homes.
So just to be clear you have no issues demo'ing people's houses for development?

Let's see. You saidKCPowercat wrote:actually I said nobody lived there....I'm not big on kicking people out of their homes.

By putting "(or worked)" does say nobody worked there. So, yes, you said nobody lived there but you also added "or worked".This situation is much more like the racetrack than p&l....nobody lived (or worked) in the p&l zone.
Whether I like it or not really doesn't matter. It happens, willingly and unwillingly, for many economic development projects. Given at one time most of what is now considered downtown was residential I would guess you wouldn't want that economic development then. Living units have been sacrificed for economic development for many years and it will continue. At one time time farmland was prairie and woods. And many living units were farmland or prairie or woods. Sacrificing what was previously there is the cost of development.
And again, where do you propose this project to be built? Just like a pol you dodged that question.

I'm really not sure there could be a better place. It's not just a lab, folks, it's also the HQ for the entire East Patrol. Where better to put the HQ for the East Patrol than right by where a large percentage of crime / murders happen in KC?

Perhaps on 18th near Brooklyn. Tons of surface lots. And close to Arthur Bryant's (For lunch!).mean wrote:I'm really not sure there could be a better place. Not very much crime there, it's almost all industrial and largely vacant / desloate most of the time. Better to be where the people are, imo, than sequestered away in an industrial wasteland.
