Only one KC joint, and it's Bryant's? Surprised they didn't go with OK Joe's, since they seem to be the media darlings lately.

Re: STL #1 in Bar B Que ???
generally i've considered st. louis to be over-rated when it comes to national reputation in bbq but perennially oh so enthusiastic - probably a function of being an authentic enough 2nd tier bbq city sort of physically "sandwiched...mmm" between two bbq superpowers and a lesser rural bbq hinterland to the immediate south, and maybe that's paying off...albeit this ranking is a little much. it could just be that st. louis has been slacking off under a flood of vinegar and tomato sauce the past 30 years until now.

The people I know from the St. Louis area must not know of this place. Almost all have said the average BBQ joint in KC is better than any in St. Louis.

The average BBQ joint in KC is better than Pappy's, yes.

My boss, born and raised in St. Louis, thought that "barbecue" meant grilling hamburgers and then dumping them in a vat of Maull's spiked with either cola or beer.

you guys are being mean!
but yes, bbq in st. louis still has a lot of catching up to do and i doubt it will ever be as easy to find good bbq in st. louis as it is memphis and kc. luckily, kansas city and memphis are weekend trips away for astronomically good bbq.

Someone here should open a toasted ravioli restaurant and call it "Kansas City style toasted ravioli" just to piss them off.
Except no one likes toasted ravioli

you guys can make fun of st. louis "bbq" but i draw the line at hating on medicore derivatives of italian-american food, which i happen to enjoy.KCMax wrote:Someone here should open a toasted ravioli restaurant and call it "Kansas City style toasted ravioli" just to piss them off.

I happen to have a soft spot in my heart (and a hard spot in my arteries) for St. Louis's freaky white Velveeta, and their pizza featuring it.pash wrote:These are the same people who top their pizzas with Velveeta. Is there really anything to discuss?

This poster is in my kitchen, the 7 deadly sins of st. louis "food products," it's so gross it's good. The guy needs to do a completely seperate print of pork steaks with gross runny bbq sauce pouring out of a tin pan, gushing out the back door.

Gushing out the back door is closely associated with St. Louis cuisine.warwickland wrote:The guy needs to do a completely seperate print of pork steaks with gross runny bbq sauce pouring out of a tin pan, gushing out the back door.

KC bbq blows StL bbq away.......except for pork steaks and maull's. There is no better summertime meal. None, I tell you.

Pork steaks on my grill - OK. But using Maull's - forget about it. Many other sauces are much better.
