Buck O'Neil educational center

Post by KCPowercat »

There was a fundraising story on Channel 9 today about Sprint and JIK giving money for the new Buck O'Neil educational center....and then they mentioned the Royals gave $100,000.  ONE hundred thousand?  Are you kidding me?  That is disgraceful and the Royals should be embarrassed.

A building being built for a baseball purpose, named after one of the greatest baseball men this city has ever seen and the Royals give the equivalent of a nice car to the effort?  Sad Royals, very sad.

I agree its probably sad, but lets also not forget the Royals aren't a huge multi-national corporation. They're not a small mom and pop operation either, but their revenues are nowhere near Sprint numbers.

That being said, with the amount they're being publicly subsidized, and the amount they're wasting on the bloated corpse of Scott Elarton, they can afford far more than $100,000.

Sprint gets in the game
Sprint’s philanthropic foundation has edged the Buck O’Neil Education and Research Center forward with a $100,000 donation.

The announcement was made Tuesday, the 87th anniversary of the founding of the Negro National League at the Paseo YMCA building, where the center will be located. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum has now raised about $1.8 million of the $15 million it says is needed. It hopes to begin work later this year.
the site is right across from a brand new apartment building on 19th street. another item to fill the gap between crossroads and 18th and vine.

A new mural has been painted on the south side of the future Buck O'Neil Education Center (formerly the Paseo YMCA). Ollie Gates, who is leading the effort to restore the property, commissioned it.

It's the same artist who did the Michael Jackson mural near 18th and Troost.

There is some speculation that the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum might eventually move into this building.
There is no fifth destination.
