It seems pretty clear that conventions are still worth our attention when you see streams of Skills USA participants streaming out of Cosentino's with bagfulls of foodstuffs and wandering into other downtown establishments -- not to mention that they stay all over the city.

I was at Cosentino's last night and I asked a guy at the register how business was going and he stated that they were slammed for the same reason you stated above.

Are you guys really freaking out about the rendering?
It's a proposal. The building hasn't been designed. The architecture firm hasn't even touched this project yet. If the building is built, it will not resemble that rendering in any way whatsoever except maybe the height.

Why not just use slave labor while we're at it and take the savings over 50%? And don't bother with building codes, maybe we can save another 20% there.beautyfromashes wrote: Here's an idea: Cut the unions out and save the city 20% on the cost of the project.

This forum has that power?
Just think of how cool KC would be if we told people to preserve old buildings, or make downtown more pedestrian friendly, or told the city's lawyers to read contracts before they were signed, or told the Mayor not to have his wife run the office...or...or...

You know, I was never thrilled with the idea of a twin next to the P&L. I think that that building needs its own space, as it is a piece of art in of itself. A convention hotel is needed, but it would be nice if they could connect at the lobby, but space the tower out from each other as much as possible.IraGlacialis wrote: You are not the only one. It could be the height, the blockiness, the fact that it appears to be an extremely large yet generic structure next to a KC icon...
If it were completely adjacent to the P&L building, I'd prefer something a bit more complimentary, kind of along the lines of the Four Seasons in New York. and if it were to be a more modern style, at least don't make it one big rectangle that almost seems to try and overpower the art deco structure.

That would be easy. Just take the new guest tower and move it 90 degrees on its axis. Its orientation would be like a larger and taller Doubletree. That way from the south it could be as skinny as the Hyatt.

Yeah, I should have replaced the "could" with a "would".moderne wrote: That would be easy. Just take the new guest tower and move it 90 degrees on its axis. Its orientation would be like a larger and taller Doubletree. That way from the south it could be as skinny as the Hyatt.

I'd like to move it 45 degrees. I think KC is the only city I've ever been to in which every street and every building is alligned in a perfect grid. Having a building that was alligned in a different direction might be an intersting addition to the skyline.moderne wrote: That would be easy. Man, Is it just me, or is EVERYONE on here just completely tired of hearing about these "Studys" that are done, year after year...the positive "we need a convention hotel" results...and the slow eventual groan from city hall that we need a more "current" study to be done?
Seriously, does anyone else ever just look at Funk & Glorias portrait and say "WTF?!?!?!"

"Complementary" doesn't have to mean "identical", far from it actually.phxcat wrote: You know, I was never thrilled with the idea of a twin next to the P&L. I'm just saying that it should either be a similar style (gothic or art deco) or such a drastically unique style that it actually goes well with the classic structure (a la Nelson-Atkins and Bloch building).
In any case, it needs to be either set back or shortened.

Yes kull...just another notch of incompetence..probably won't stop doing this until the study says that we don't need a convention hotel.

The KCPL building looks beautiful only on three sides. It looks like ass on the fourth side - it has desperately needed something to cover up that utility wall ever since the day it opened.phxcat wrote: You know, I was never thrilled with the idea of a twin next to the P&L. I sorta like that blank wall. It makes the building like a sculptural presence, like a spire from the Monument Valley. Only the lowest ten floors are unsightly, as they are brick. The rest is the same limestone as rest of the building, I would not call expensive crafted limestone slabs a "utility wall."

Re: Convention hotel proposal for P&L building (and surrounding block)
I wouldn't even call the upper portion of that wall blank as there is a design aspect in the fluting(?) especially at the top setbacks.
As for the bottom portion, I have always that thought that an art deco metalwork piece would look awesome covering it. Something to emphasize "Power" and "Light", preferably with light rays and lightning bolts (like the Ancient of Days piece at the GE Tower).
But using that area (the lower blank portion, not the upper "blank" area) as an adjacent area for a new building works as well I guess.

You seem to be implying that this study is only because of the Funk. Given his dynamic leadership of the council and how they follow right behind him on every issue, well .....................................im2kull wrote: Seriously, does anyone else ever just look at Funk & Glorias portrait and say "WTF?!?!?!"
In reality this study was not just for the Funk but for the rest of the very independent city council. It is quite amazing that you focus all of your negativity of city government towards the Funk but forget the rest of the council has at much at fault as him. So if you wish to pick on the Funk go ahead but don't forget the rest of the council.
I may be right. I may be wrong. But there is a lot of gray area in-between.
