Re: Cosentino's Grocery downtown
Dear Jesus,
Myself and my useless, white, bicycling, wine-drinking, pocket-gentrifier friends really need a grocery store besides the Apple Market at Indy Ave and Monroe, because there are black and brown people shopping there, and they speak funny languages and shoot each other. Sure, it is walking distance from my house, but there is a big parking lot in front and I am afraid someone is going to gank my iPod and sell it for crack while dancing on my corpse and singing negro field spirituals, or doing a Mexican hat dance and hollering la cucaracha. Please give us a safe grocer with a parking garage so we can shuffle our Wonder bread, mayonnaise, and Oscar Meyer bologna into our hybrid SUV, and seclude ourselves safely in our house where no persons with incorrect skin colors may accost us with a sob story about how they just got out of jail and really need to sell us this alarm clock.
Sincerely,
mean & wife

Re: Cosentino's Grocery downtown
If the whole point of the new grocery is to right all of the evils of capitalisim and racisim, perhaps they should have built a nice soviet-style bread shop downtown and we could have all waited in line, shoulder to shoulder, with our diverse comrades. Of course, since we will all be turning in our bread ration cupons rather than using currancy, the number of checkout lanes at the door will be irrelevant. Maybe we should install another dozen checkout lanes just so people can stand there and have a job, even if there is no bread to sell.
That would have made DT vibrant for sure!

I'll be making anti parking garage checkout lane t-shirts that will be distributed at the front entrance 20 minutes before the doors open.

shelves were stocked with wine. tables were set up near the front window (activity you'll be able to see!). the sushi counter is right in the middle of the store.

Went to Marsh's Awful Sunfresh today and for the first time two employees asked if I needed help. It was either their New Years Resolution or the fear of losing business to the new downtown market. My New Years Resolution is to never go back to Marsh's. Ever.

I am pretty stoked as this place will be right on my wife's bus route home.

My wife and I went to Brookside Market today and commented that this will probably be the last time for a while that we use the Brookside Market.

Re: Cosentino's Grocery downtown
Is Cosentino's going to be STAFFED for this big grand opening? I'm talking bringing in workers from other supermarkets to help out.
The Star is hyping this up big time and as they should. I'd hate to see the shelves go empty or people not be able to check out quickly. The store is small enough that I'd be a bit worried about accommodating large crowds-- remember that there is no supermarket of this caliber from Brookside to North of the River. In many ways having the amenity of a beautiful grocer downtown is more useful and desirable than a party bar district. There are people that want any excuse to dismiss progress downtown and Cosentino's needs to be extra vigilent to offer a fully stocked store with good service.
Where is the Red Box?

Re: Cosentino's Grocery downtown
I've been a naysayer after learning that this would be similar to the market in Brookside (a store that I cannot stand, personally), but after walking by today and peeking in the windows and seeing all the employees stocking up and getting trained, I'm done a complete 180 and am now back to being excited about Tuesday.
