Please don't post copyrighted material
Please don't post copyrighted material on the KCRag forum. Snippets with quotations and links are fine and encouraged, but do not post articles in their entirety.
Thanks, and have a loooovely day.

Can we post the whole article if credit is given to the author?

Read the copyright policy of the outlet you're planning to copy and paste. They'll be very clear about it.AllThingsKC wrote: Can we post the whole article if credit is given to the author?

^by that, even quoting sections might be considered non-kosher. But I think the Star is willing to overlook our small snippet quoting if people don't abuse it (i.e quoting entire articles).

Re: Please don't post copyrighted material
That makes it sound like we can't even put in a quote?!
But, a simple link to the article is fine?
But, then it's a question of how much of a quote is too much?ComandanteCero wrote: ^by that, even quoting sections might be considered non-kosher. But I think the Star is willing to overlook our small snippet quoting if people don't abuse it (i.e quoting entire articles).

That's true, though it could be argued that that constitutes fair use. If in doubt, don't do it.AllThingsKC wrote: That makes it sound like we can't even put in a quote?!

Re: Please don't post copyrighted material
Quoting a paragraph or two is usually considered fair use, but pasting the entire article is not. Even if you cite the source.
Just post the key paragraph and give us a link to the full article on the source web site.

Re: Please don't post copyrighted material
Ok. Sorry for asking so many questions about it (and I'll probably have more). I just want to make sure that I don't do anything that has myself or the forum violate any copyright laws. So, I'm paying careful attention to this thread and taking it very seriously.

Well, you don't need to worry about getting yourself in trouble. It'll most likely just get me in trouble.

Interesting that this comes up now. It is a policy of most if not all the boards I visit and always has been.
I've always wondered how posters here get by with all the posting of entire articles.

Re: Please don't post copyrighted material
I think we've tried to enforce it here, but its hard to get every single post that has a copyrighted article, and to be honest, I've half-assed it in enforcing it.nota wrote: Interesting that this comes up now. It is a policy of most if not all the boards I visit and always has been.

Re: Please don't post copyrighted material
Skyscraperpage.com is much worse about posting entire articles than our forum, and they rarely enforced it until a couple of months ago when they got a cease and desist letter from Crain's Chicago Business (kind of like a KC Business Journal). Then they started enforcing it pretty strictly. (Over there, people would regularly post entire articles from various sources, like every other day)
So really I think as long as we don't quote entire articles we're fine. And if some source has a problem with just quoting a couple of paragraphs, Bahua should get a cease and desist warning before getting really in trouble.

one Question. Is the content of the forum after it is posted considered copyrighted?
