Re: What restaurants do you want in the P&L District?
Rent there will be too high for any locals, they need to draw as many chains as they can! Kansas City loves the chains. Rent on the plaza and zona rosa is cheaper. If locals go in down there they will suffer because the kc dinner isn't ready to pay 15-20 bucks for parking. The valet companies will make a killing like they do in Chicago. If any restaurant has to show parking and pay for it that's the only way to recoup the cost. If the restaurants only budget 6% of their projected gross sales for the rent they have a chance but when you have to throw on another 5 to 8% for parking rent so you can sell wine and booze you will be screwed.

It might be local but it has pocket's like a chain, Houlihan's Restaurants also owns J. Gilbert's Wood-Fired Steaks in addition to its flagship Houlihan's restaurant concepts. When I think of local resturants I think of some thing a little bit smaller in structure. After all applebees is a local, pizza hut could be concidered almost local.

the bristol is a far cry from applebee's and pizza hut, and i think you know that. just because the houlihan's group (a local restaurant group btw) has some clout doesn't mean it's less "local." gates has as many restaurants in KC as the houlihan's group does, plus a sauce empire - is he like Applebee's too?
unfortunately, the P+L rents are so high that the only locals who can afford it are the bigger local groups. better than nothing, though far from optimal.

My thoughts are..."who the heck cares?" We need to be thinking twenty years out, not two years out. As the existing downtown we have today and the new Power and Light area conurbate together over the years, rents will probably even out somewhat between P&L and the rest of the currently existing retail space downtown. Think long term...

Agreed. P&L needs a "Soylent Green" restaurant.Tosspot wrote: My thoughts are..."who the heck cares?" We need to be thinking twenty years out, not two years out. Looks like ChinaBAR is the newest tennet announcement for the P&L district according to bizjournals...
http://kansascity.bizjournals.com/kansa ... rround=lfn
An original restaurant called ChinaBAR will be the newest addition to the downtown entertainment district.
Reed Cordish of The Cordish Co. said Friday that the 7,500-square-foot, Eastern cuisine restaurant will open in the Power & Light District in the fall of 2007.
ChinaBAR is an original concept by CB5 Restaurant Group, a Greenwich, Conn., restaurant and entertainment company. CB5 has developed more than 80 restaurants, including concepts associated with W Hotels in Atlanta, New Orleans and Los Angeles.

I want to resurrect this thread and add dream retail into the mix, since there's plenty of retail to go around in the district.

Bahua, whats the excitement around Cafe Tu Tu Tango? I've never been to one. What makes it a good place to have in P&L?

It's a lively tapas restaurant with very good food, but the main reason for me is that they also keep an excellent draught selection.

I'd like to see this SPIN!Neapolitan Pizza open up a place in P&L. Me and the family hit it up a couple weeks ago after looking at furniture at Crate & Barrel.
It was awesome grub and a neat space. Order when you walk in and then grab yourself a table. Staff brings the food to you. Terrific pizza (similar to La Cucina Di Mamma) and the 8 Color Salad we shared was delicious. I think it would do real well downtown.

Dick's Last Resort
The Pendergast Poltergeist Project!
I finally divorced beer and proposed to whiskey, but I occassionally cheat with fine wine.

Has anyone been to this place in Los Angeles? Prohibition Burgers. It might be a good fit for the P&L District, since KC was such a big Prohibition town.
