FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Aug. 21, 2006
Downtown portion of 16th Street closing
A portion of West 16th Street will be closed between Baltimore Avenue and Broadway Boulevard from Aug. 22-25 beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and ending at 5 p.m. on Friday.
This closure is being done to accommodate work being done by KCP&L in conjunction with the Bartle Hall expansion and the future relocation of West 16th Street.
The detour will use the eastbound and westbound lanes of Truman Road, which temporarily have been re-opened to accommodate the detoured traffic.

"Rerouting" 16th street?
i received this email from city hall the other day. does anyone know what the reference to "relocating 16th street" means? it's straight as an arrow right now between mcgee and broadway... why change that? is the PAC driving it?

I'm guessing they'll eventually close it off entirely, at least between Broadway and Wyandotte.

I thought the PAC renderings called for small scale, street-fronting retail on 16th. I would think that the couple of landowners on the south side of the street might not be too keen on that either.bahua wrote: I'm guessing they'll eventually close it off entirely, at least between Broadway and Wyandotte.

it won't be closed... why would or should it be closed?
The Bartle expansion doesn't butt right up against the back of the PAC does it?

I have no idea.
But, here's a (small) rendering. I'm guessing 16th will just be straightened and have the median removed.

thanks, kard! it looks like 16th street's alignment will not change (maybe just narrowed, consistent with the blocks east of baltimore). assuming the rendering is accurate...

Just add a bike lane. That would narrow it to cars.chrizow wrote: more streets in KC need to be narrowed.

Yeah, but this one is two lane and actually had a nice median with mature trees planted in it - as opposed to the usual median-less 6-8 lane monstrosities around the rest of DT.chrizow wrote: more streets in KC need to be narrowed.
