And we wouldn't be talking about free fare bus if this wasn't so successful.

I wouldn't be surprised if the extensions to the Riverfront and UMKC double ridership on the Streetcar. You'll be connecting a lot more things.
I'm looking forward to it.

More than quadruple. Combined they would more than triple the length and you would expect non users along the current line to find a reason to ride with more destinations available.Chris Stritzel wrote: ↑Tue Jan 07, 2020 5:06 pm I wouldn't be surprised if the extensions to the Riverfront and UMKC double ridership on the Streetcar. It's the network effect, the value of the network grows more than the sum of it's parts.

Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
The streetcar had highest ridership in country per mile (edit: according to Streetcar Authority a while back), which isn't hard to do when so short and free to ride. Will probably still be high with the extension but maybe not as high per mile. The hotel/residential/biz presence within two blocks of downtown stretch is far higher than through rest of stretch (at this time). Though if free bus ridership jumps it would feed into the streetcar spine.

Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
Comparing light rail systems of similar size
Kc’s 6448 per day is 2930 per mile per day
The San Francisco historic trolleys have around 3020 per mile per day
So it’s arguably not the most ridership when small and if you look bigger it’s definently not. There’s light rail systems at double ridership per mile

Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
Who is in charge of counting the riders ?
Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
Riders are counted by automated passenger counters installed over every door. They are highly accurate (with slight under-counting) and counts are checked manually by KCATA staff in accordance with FTA regulations.

At what percentage do they undercount? Less than 1% or a little more?Riders are counted by automated passenger counters installed over every door. They are highly accurate (with slight under-counting) and counts are checked manually by KCATA staff in accordance with FTA regulations.
Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
Lots of ice this morning. Delayed start with bus bridge ("streetcar link"). One bus + one streetcar later in the morning, then two streetcars running limited service (15-20m headways) by about 1pm.

Buses dont cut headways during snow events do they?
Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
Depends. If we're unable to get operators safely to the depot, then we'll have to skip runs.

Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
It's not the norm though. Seems the streetcar reduces service in bad weather as a norm. That wasn't my expectation. It will become a bigger problem as we expand and its being relied on more for commuting.
