MODOT has no money to spare, too busy building multi-million dollar highway interchanges.
Yeah, that’s why if it’s not on a new bridge, it should be bundled into a HOA bridge rehabilitation. The bridge is 33 years so it’s probably coming up on one being needed.

Bundling federal highway money, federal transit sources, state money and local money from both cities seems most likely to produce results. Current streetcar expansion is four sources between both sections. The starter line was (off the top of my head) four sources too.

The timing of this effort is very smart if it proceeds, since it could take 1-3 years to fund and finish engineering. Even if it’s just the bridge crossing in a first phase, a stop at 10th Ave would obviously complete the hardest aspect of the project and provides transit benefits by enabling transfers to UMKC from the NKC flex service. Expanding track north on Burlington could be done in the same phase or up to two more phases. Plenty of systems expand on the scale of 10 blocks at a time.
Good point, if regular rehabbing of the bridge is combined with bringing 9 down to grade and adding a streetcar line on top, we have a much better chance of landing state and federal dollars to match KCMO/NKC contributions.

Proving out that the timing of this resolution couldn't have been better, there's now a two year clock to get this to the point it could be federally funded under the most ideal situation in ten years

Bryant DeLong won mayor of NKC by 4 votes. If it holds up, great news for Streetcar!

Haven’t read anything on him, is he very pro transit/streetcar?

He is the council member who got NKC looking at streetcar again. Streetcar expansion was part of his platform.

Great news! How can kcmo residents help support them? I'd love a connection to armour

The NKC council has 8 members, half were up for election + the mayor. All 8 in Jan approved the resolution to look into the streetcar. Two won re-election and two are new to the council.

I know one who is new is against the bike lanes on Armour but I don't know about their thoughts on the Streetcar.

If you want to do something-

Write the NKC and KCMO councils
Write the Clay County Commission
Write MODOT
write your congress members
If it goes up for MARC funding, add a comment in support of the project

The goal should be to get people to be aware of interest in the project. It's the first expansion that would cross city and county boundaries. The new Clay Co Commission is dramatically more competent than the last one and we need their support with the state paperwork to use the crossing.

In my opinion, it would be smart to write Clay County as a general transit support letter. There's also a need for more bus service in the northland.

NKC’s recent development will hopefully boost future TDD revenues. Is there anyway for them to garner additional funding from their lively casino.

The casino asked for a reduction in what they pay the city last year due to reduced revenue.

I don't think that's enough of a boost to pay for a streetcar on their own like we did downtown/midtown. If they build out the way they are planning to, it might be possible in 10 years.

I believe this is the only new news:
In early January, the City Council directed staff to work with the Streetcar Authority to determine feasibility and craft a proposal for extending a line into the city.

Since then, representatives from the city, Streetcar Authority and the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority have met to brainstorm, with plans to continue talks soon, North Kansas City Mayor Bryant DeLong told the Kansas City Business Journal.

I would love for this to happen. NKC has so much going for it right now. Also, I think it would help other municipalities in joining a more connected transportation system. Just my thoughts. Thank you Dave for the summary!

Love to be connected to NKC. Could this also be combined with a lowering of 9 highway project?

It could be. The updated study would need to take that into consideration since I don't think it was part of the original NorthRail study.
