A top Southwest executive said Monday the airline is ready to explore forging a pact that would make Kansas City International Airport its chief sustainability hub for trialing new technologies as part of efforts to sharply throttle carbon emissions.

Wow. What are the ramifications of this?

well on one hand I can see why you'd want to test new technology at an airport that isn't critical to your wider operations. IE New terminal + not an important airport for connections = just enough passengers for us to get data without a big risk

Why would kci be part of a pact if that were the ramifications

Good press?

It sounds like it’s about electrification of ground support mostly.

All ground support vehicles at airports, warehouses, container terminals should be electric. It's a no brainder. They make no long trips, spend lots of idle time, plenty of local power to charge. Would save them a ton on maintenance costs.

Is that last part necessarily true of electric vehicles? Seems they would still need regular maintenance but that's just a guess.

I agree makes a lot of sense to make them electric.

Much less in regard to their regular maintenance. Tires and brakes are really the only thing to maintain. Electric engines don’t need fluids changed or belts swapped.

I figured there would be some sort of lubrication still needed and other maintenance that combustion engines didn't need. Cool!

Electric is significantly cheaper to maintain. A big reason dealerships don’t love electric.

Wouldn’t read too much into this. It’s a new terminal that southwest has a large presence at. Makes sense for them to deploy new tech before rolling it out to other airports. The timing just works.

Yep, if you buy new stuff may as well buy the latest and greatest, lowest operating cost and chance for the feds/city to chip in for charging infastructure.

EV motors have fluids, but they are typically sealed shut and don't require changing of the fluids for roughly the life of the motor. Coolant and break fluid occasionally need changed. I replaced my Tesla (with another one) and service cost over 3 years was $60 in cabin filters and a set of tires.

Since the airport will have its' own solar farm, using electric vehicles also makes a lot of sense for climate purposes.

New Delta Skyclub in Detroit. December 2021
Opening in time for holiday travel, the 4,600-square-foot space near gate A43 seats up to 100 guests and overlooks the concourse and the existing main Club.
Gives an idea of what ours will look like.

that 2nd club seems like it would be a generic one like the Priority Pass ones doesn't it? Maybe capital one new branded ones they are just trying to get their network built out.

My guess is priority pass, as they usually operate the mid-sized market lounges

MCI awarded $12,802,542 from the first year of the infrastructure bill. Anyone know what this will be used for? Runway replacement Pt.2?

While we are sprucing up the airport can we get rid of those awful "fountains" made out of billboard armatures? They are so hillbilly, like planters made out of toilets.

I quite like the aesthetic of them, they could definitely use some refurbishing though
