Whatever this thing is it is going from initially concerning to very very scary.
The scariest part is the fact that so much of this hype is stemming from media over sensationalization of the event.
Hate to defend media but they didn't cause China to shut down cities and disrupt the global supply chain. They didn't cause Italy and S Korea to create the restrictions they did. The media is just doing what they do and in this age we see the daily stats. It is what it is.

This is a 'new' virus. The fear and panic don't make sense but not surprising either. People aren't even drinking Corona beer - the media didn't prompt this. Nothing about this makes sense.

OTOH, if the world didn't react the way it did the spread would be much higher and the most conservative death rate estimates show 1%, which is still 10 times worse than flu.

BTW, my younger brother is in Rome and supposed to return tomorrow, just before the flight suspension. But I suspect he'll be bumped off flight for someone 'more important'.

My Czech friend, and his roommate, in Prague, are both showing symptoms and are in self-quarantine at home. The Czech health service is sending out medical personnel tomorrow to administer tests. The roommate had been in Germany about a week ago. My friend says everything public is being cancelled, and the streets of Prague are much emptier than they normally are.

In the Seattle metro, twenty-three of the reported 26 deaths so far in King County are linked to one Life Care Center nursing facility in Kirkland. That is worrisome.

A bit of history, the first case of the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918 in the United States was at Ft. Riley, Kansas.

That epidemic's death toll is estimated to have been anywhere from 17 to 50 million. It infected an estimated 500 million people, which was around 27 percent of the world's population at the time. The U.S. death toll is estimated to have been 675,000.

The majority of deaths seem to be elderly people or people with already weakend immune systems.

Those who have had the virus and recovered are usually under 65.

But yeah, with events cancelling and countries closing, it's like we're living in a movie.

Stuck, or sick, or even both. Reality can be a harsh mistress.

I just don't understand how they can test for this and you can be positive, what is the difference between this and the flu?

It's a new and different virus. People don't have an immunity to it. The mortality rate does appear to be higher.

Pretty sure the Corona beer thing was a joke or a hoax.

Can't really comment on mortality rate until you know how many actual cases there are, and when some 80% of infected people are asymptomatic or display only mild symptoms and perhaps don't even get tested--if they even CAN get tested, how many test kits we got?--we are very likely undercounting the true number of cases. The scary question is, by how many orders of magnitude? The answer is we probably won't know at least until this is over, and possibly ever. But yes, it appears higher, like 1-2%. It also appears there is only one case in all of Missouri. I am skeptical that any of those numbers are particularly accurate.

This whole thing is weird, some think its a hoax and a way to tank economy, Agenda 21 type conspiracy. If you stop it people will be "See told you so, it was nothing!!! More people from the flu died, all this did was tank the economy, hurt small business, etc"

One problem with the mortality rate calculation is that COVID is calculated based on known confirmed cases and flu is calculated typically after season with estimated total cases, including unconfirmed. So the 3%+ COVID estimate is probably not correct because so many have it with no conditions. However the 1% calculation is probably more inline given it factors about far more than 'known' actually have it.

Flu death rate is estimated at 0.1% and and COVID19 is at about 1.0% using a more similar methodology. The 1% is considered bottom of estimates. That's still 10X higher than flu. And COVID is maxing out intensive care units in Italy, burdening the healhcare system.

If you are youngish half of population infected, you may not get any symptoms but it only takes a week and you can give it to others, including older/at risk people.

OTOH I do think we are overreacting in various ways and at some point need to give up on containment and focus on other methods of management w/out shutting down the country/world...

Focus on the at risk people, not the carriers.

So if all these business end up filing insurance claims, will companies like AIG end up needing a bailout? There is no way they have this amount of money to cover all these claims
