Where the virus is spreading fastest
...
Our chart compares each state's seven-day average of new cases from Monday and the seven-day average from a week prior, April 27. Comparing the averages of two dates helps smooth out a lot of the noise in how states sometimes inconsistently conduct and report tests.

By this metric, Minnesota, Nebraska and Puerto Rico have the most worrisome trends, while Arkansas and Wyoming have the most positive trends. Twelve states are moving in the right direction.

But more than a third of the nation still has growing numbers of cases. And that includes states such as Texas and Virginia, where Republican and Democratic governors are beginning to unveil re-opening plans.

Another 3.2 million jobless claims last week for a total over 33M in 7 weeks, down to 1996 level - though jobs are starting to return. April BLS data should be released tomorrow with metro numbers next week.

Many are making more from unemployment than their wage so may exploit by not attempting to return to work.

If people can make way more on unemployment than working full time, then minimum wage is probably to low.

The idea you want to look at is called guaranteed basic income or universal basic income.

We hand out a lot of money in the form of benefits and there's government staff behind every program. In 2013 apparently there were ~125 anti-poverty programs at the federal level alone + social security

What if instead we gave everyone over 16 a minimum amount of money every month, no strings attached.

We could make it be some small amount and you can get more, like if you're a single mother, disabled, a veteran or a senior you get extra. But it's not a separate program, it's all the same one. Sure, there will still be fraud but you can send one person looking at the disabled veteran single mother rather than the money coming from multiple programs.

If you can live off that while going to school, you don't work. Or you can get a minimum wage job and make more. The idea is we stop subsidizing not working and we shift it to a program where it enables opportunity because there's no worry about taking chances.

It changes the entire market for charity when you know 100% of people are given money each month. For example, you shift to helping people get off drugs so their money goes to food instead of buying food for them.

Ontario did a test of the idea.
https://newatlas.com/good-thinking/cana ... t-results/
A new report, from researchers at McMaster University and Ryerson University, has surveyed over 200 participants from a prematurely cancelled basic income experiment that took place in Southern Ontario between 2017 and 2019. The report suggests participants saw improvements in mental health, housing stability and social relationships, along with less frequent visits to hospitals and doctors that lowered the impact on general health services.

And looking at Mississippi today. it's probably better if than money was going directly to people instead of state government.

When you look at the big picture handing people money would produce much the same or better result as handing some people money through a bunch of programs with rules.

Some people will waste the money but most will use it well. Some people using a current program well will waste the money without rules but more who are limited by the rules will gain new value

On on hand Socialism can lead to govt dependency OTOH Capitalism typically ignores those in need. The Moderate balanced approach is for Feds to invest in people struggling, developing enough practical skills to ultimately become self-sufficient, not dependent on the system.

Trump's personal valet has tested positive for COVID. Testing will take place every day in the White House instead of once a week.

New cases showing up in 64 young children that cause severe illness including cardiac arrest that might be related to COVID inflammation. It's called pediatric multi-inflammatory syndrome.

There were 3.2 million Americans who filed unemployment last week which brings the total to 33 million left unemployed by COVID. Many still have not received unemployment benefits after weeks being jobless.

About 9 million children, ages 12 and under, are not getting enough food according to the Brookings Institute.

Immunity to COVID after infection might last up to one year.

About 20M jobs were lost in April with 14.7% unemployment however it doesn't give the whole picture since COVID impact started.
https://www.marketwatch.com/story/coron ... =home-page

- There were 25M net lost from start of March to end of April, despite some jobs starting to return end of April. Down to 1999 level.
- The 14.7% unemp rate is based on labor force reducing (156481) but many working in Feb aren't job searching such as someone not working/searching because kids are home
- If comparing to labor force before COVID impact (164546), the unemployment rate is closer to 20%.
- And that doesn't include the May losses, pay cuts and many who haven't been able to file for unemployment, possibly another 10M+.
