Pretty sure the blind partisan political alliances a large amount of Americans are falling into is going to prevent more than any one side of the political spectrum.

Trumpism isn't really a side of the political spectrum, though. If it becomes one, well, so much for America. Fun while it lasted.

It's always worth keeping in mind that a lot of the Trump cult is based on personality, and the candidates that have tried to embrace his style have mostly gone down in flames, even in red states. And Trump himself lost the popular vote against an unpopular opponent.

Good point. It can be hard to maintain perspective amidst the chaos. I liked it better when there was less chaos.

Will be interesting to see if GOP support diminishes for Trump before election, some may even step up against him at this point. If the case and polls drop dramatically for him to point of looking like a landslide loss, it actually wouldn't be surprising if Trump resigns before election. His ego is big and insane enough that he might rather resign with his alternate reality vision of his 'amazing' success that he wants in history books than deal with losing in a landslide.

Lots of ifs, maybe a fantasy. Probably won't be a landslide but some GOP turning against him might happen, especially blue/purple state GOP.

History suggests otherwise. If the polls look especially grim, you point to 2016 and say Hillary was supposed to win. If the polls prove prescient and you lose in a landslide, you say it's because of rampant fraud and insist you actually won. The playbook isn't exactly a secret here.

The *national* polls showed Hillary would win, and she did win popular vote. But it was too close to call with the battleground *state* polls, and it was close. If state level polls show more than 10 point spread, it's probably right, if less than 10, could go either way. And you never know who will show up to vote.

Expecting Trump campaign will try to convince reluctant Biden leaners to not show up to vote, not necessarily vote for Trump.

BTW, in my previous post I meant if some GOP *elected officials* turn on Trump, not just GOP voters.

Michael Steele said on Real Time with Bill Maher tonight that the White House's internal polling is showing that Trump is starting to lose support among GOP voters.

Everything in this election will depend on black voters. If black citizens vote in large numbers, Trump is toast. Hillary lost in 2016 mostly because of lack of black voters turning out in crucial swing states.

Do we necessarily have to wait until November? From the Portland Maine newspaper. Hope many more will follow suit. I do think it's time for the man to resign. He won't though. I do not even think he will retire quietly if he loses the election.

As mentioned, if more and more current GOP officials in office turn on Trump, might be possible he resigns if he's convinced he'll lose. His massive ego would probably rather quit 'while ahead' in his mind than tolerate a deflating loss. Pretty small chance given his base will feed his ego, even if it shrinks before election (his base, not his ego).

He could also resign so Pence could pardon him for crimes he will surely be charged with once he's out of office.

I'm sure that Joe "Republicans are good guys and we can work across the aisle with them" Biden would prosecute Trump and his admin just as vigorously as Obama prosecuted the Bush admin for their myriad crimes and the white collar criminals who tanked the economy

So he's going to be fine?

I think Trump should be most worried about the New York State courts.

Yes, there are actually several state courts he might have to worry about. Presidential pardons won't save him there, and a couple of those states may not have a Republican governor who might pardon him.

There are reportedly several sealed indictments from the Mueller investigation, and we don't know what is in them. They might be so toxic that no future president would pardon him. A future Republican president might not pardon him anyway--depending on who they are. Trump has made a lot of enemies in his own party that are biding their time until he's gone. Do you think Mike DeWine or John Kasich would go out on a limb for Trump?

There is also another unknown. How many other foreign governments did Trump try and pressure for personal favors, or that he might have rewarded or punished using presidential power? Foreign governments that have stayed quiet about it while Trump is still in office, but once Biden is president, might reveal Trump's actions. How many foreign intelligence services have damaging information they've been withholding, or even have Trump on tape committing some crime (Trump still reportedly uses his personal, unsecured cellphone). And how many of these foreign intelligence services have Trump proxies on tape committing crimes on his behalf (Jared, Ivanka, Don Jr., Eric, Rudy Giuliani, etc.).

https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/06/politic ... index.html

Trump's attempts to hide his taxes in the US may have already set off investigations in foreign countries as well. Once he's out of office, those governments will no longer fear retribution if they go after him.

Seems that Biden might be pressured to pick a black VP to avoid significant backlash given recent events. Michelle Grisham (Latina) otherwise seemed to me level headed of options thrown out there but several could work. Thoughts on Atlanta mayor?

A mayor of a big city would make sense, lots of diversity of individuals with good executive office experience.

Managing a large city can provide as much managerial experience as running a small state; and in some ways provides more relevant experience in daily problem-solving than being a member of Congress who has never been a mayor or governor.

One can make an argument that running a large, diverse city like New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, or Houston for two terms would provide a lot of experience governing.

Vegas has Biden as a 20 point favorite fwiw. As always, "run and vote like you are 30 points behind," would be the advice I would give them

At a minimum, any admin needs to provide City and local gov't additional Fed funding to backstop their tanking revenues as a result of COVID so they don't have to lay off employees.

With a pretty good chance the White House admin as well as Senate/House going all DEM after election, we'll probably see a rush for approvals that only GOP would comply with before election.

IE, Charter/Spectrum asks FCC to drop restrictions on data caps before election. No caps was a condition with TimeWarnerCable merger...
