Westboro Baptist Church
Against my better judgement, I decided to start this thread. I'm not trying to draw more attention to them in this thread (because they want attention). But, I do find it interesting some of the things they are protesting these days...
Not including various military bases and certain churches, on their picket list this month is:
KU's graduation
K-State's graduation
Joplin High School's graduation (with President Obama)
A couple of times at the Sprint Center.
They're protesting graduations now? I may never understand those people. Graduations? Really?

Would rather see them at graduations than funerals. But, something tells me they still do funerals.

Re: Westboro Baptist Church
Is there any possibility of their movement dying when the older members of the clan die out/become incapacitated or do you think the younger ones are brainwashed too?
How big is their church anyway? How do they get the money to make all these trips?

It's already passed to further generations, the daughter is a lawyer and main mouthpiece for the group. I couldn't see these folks get much in the way of donations, they are extreme even for wingnut standards.
Re: Westboro Baptist Church
One of the kids (or a younger relative) calls into 96.5 every so often and has good natured (but circular) arguments with the morning show hosts. From listening to her it sounds like there is another generation on the way that is as whacked out as the older members of the group.KCMax wrote:Is there any possibility of their movement dying when the older members of the clan die out/become incapacitated or do you think the younger ones are brainwashed too?

Something tells me that in the case of Joplin's graduation, it might as well be a funeral...WSPanic wrote:Would rather see them at graduations than funerals. But, something tells me they still do funerals.
A couple years ago, a preacher came to our campus and did his little fire-and-brimestone/"we are all going to hellfire" rant for the usual stuff (homosexuality, upstart women, masturbation, Catholicism, pre-marital sex, evolution, etc...).grovester wrote:I couldn't see these folks get much in the way of donations, they are extreme even for wingnut standards.
However, once Fred Phelps was mentioned, the guy simply shook his head and said that Phelps needed to be saved.

Re: Westboro Baptist Church
I may have posted this experience before, but it's worth repeating.
Two years ago, Lady Gaga performed at the Sprint.
I went down to check out the street theater that I expected to come out for her, and I wasn't dissappointed. Gagas fans were in good form and I was a bit surprised by the Phelps protest across Grand from the arena.
The Phelpsians were mostly women from 20 to 50, but I was especially saddened by the number of young kids that made up their group, with the expected signs and screaming hatred at the heathens.
Two guys left the crowd waiting for the show and crossed the street. One was dressed in sprayon leather pants, foot high platform boots and leather suspenders, the other had on a g-string/loin cloth that he had fashioned out of caution tape.
When they got in the street, in front of the Phelps clan, they pranced, blew kisses to each of them, and told them that they loved them. It was like teasing a guard dog with a bloody roast.
The Phelps' packed it up shortly after and dissappeared. Brilliant!

Re: Westboro Baptist Church
Thousands have signed two separate petitions that would classify Topeka’s Westboro Baptist Church as a hate group and strip it of its tax exempt status.

Anonymous Targets Westboro Baptist Church After Newtown Vigil Protest Threat
On Sunday, Anonymous posted to Pastebin a list of data that it claimed belonged to Westboro members. The data included names, street addresses, phone numbers and email addresses, according to CNET....
Phelps-Roper's Twitter was also hacked and the Westboro Baptist Church's website was taken down. Anonymous claimed responsibility for both via the @YourAnonNews account.
