In related news, Benjamin said the renovation of the historic 12-story Midland Building into 117 affordable apartments is expected to begin before the end of the year. That project should be completed by late 2021 or early 2022.

I’m exited to see what Cordish can do with a rehab project vs new build locally. I’ve seen some examples of their rehab projects in other markets but this will be the first residential conversion for the company.

The Baltimore-based developer is aiming to start construction in the fall on its $25 million redevelopment of the former Midland office building — next to Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland in the Kansas City Power & Light District — said Nick Benjamin, the district's executive director and Cordish's managing director of multifamily development.

Work will start, he said, after Cordish finishes undergoing the state's historic tax credit process. The developer seeks approximately $3 million for the Saxon at Midland, which will create 117 apartments in the 12-story building at 1221 Baltimore Ave.

With an average unit size of 447 square feet, the majority of apartments will be 518-square-foot, one-bedroom units. The apartments will range from $700 to $1,100 per month, and 50% of the units will be available for less than $950.

Are those tax credits automatic if you qualify? The article was strange to me since it glanced over what most people care about - 3 Light - without really providing much new info on Saxon either.

I believe the annual awards are competitive? I know each session the legislature tries to gut the program.

Seems like "an easy cut" this year

One less vacant building in Downtown KC. Big win here. It's great that many downtown vacant buildings are being reactivated. Every time one starts and opens, it's another step toward building new buildings in Downtown.

I did, actually. I think I heard some machine noise from inside. There was a door open and a wooden plank is jammed in the old revolving door. Pretty odd

Well, it was fun while it lasted. I guess sharing it here made the owner make it private
