Prairie Logic - new art installation to be built in P+L

"El Dorado Architects is currently teaming with Janet on a piece that has only one moving part, albeit a very large one. “Prairie Logic”, will be located on a landscaped roof at 12th and Walnut, in downtown Kansas City. Locals may recognize this location as existing on the same block as Cosentino’s Market and its scantily clad cousin–The Jones pool.

Prairie Logic was commissioned by the City of Kansas City, as part of their 1% for Art program. It consists of a custom-fabricated perforated cor-ten boxcar, glacially revolving around a 120 foot diameter railroad track situated in a rooftop-field of prairie grass. The boxcar is motorized, puttering along about 5 inches every night. Over the course of a year, it completes its circular journey."

On one hand it's a cool idea, I like the glowing box car etc.

On the other hand, it make that whole part of the roof garden less useable. Prairie grass is not soft and comfortable like green grass. No one is going to want to lounge around in it. Also having a giant box car and train tracks may be a little intimidating. Will just have to see how this looks when built.

Maybe they think this will make maintenance easier not having to cut the grass. It may also prove to keep people from hanging out up there.

Wonder if it will be visible from street level?

I hope it's visible from the street, but doubt it. Looks cool it will be lit up at night, but isn't that park closed at night? Who will be able to see if you can't go up there and it's not visible from the street?

Too bad they couldn't hire a local artist to come up with a concept, especially since it is city funds.

I haven't been up there in ages, but wasn't that area planted in sedums before?

did anyone notice the new artwork on the east facade of the cosentino's garage? you can only really see it if you're inside the honkey tubes on your way to the 1201 walnut garage.

Yeah I saw that on the garage from ground level. Looks like the garage has a growth or something.

The aforementinoed piece of art has been placed on the city garage rooftop next to the Jones Pool--as part of the 1% for Art program. It's a painted boxcar on the prairie grass there.

I think it's a nice installation. However, I do wish it was more visible to the public, and in a more prominent location at ground level. I think it would have been better placed in the City Market courtyard on the north where that vacant space is now--just north of the entrance to the Arabia Steamboat Museum.

Another good location would have been somewhere in Penn Valley Park.

So can anyone access this roof at any time of day? If so this will be a really nice spot to relax in the middle of the hustle and bustle. I'm going to do some investigating tonight...
