Living in Chicago now, I always hate listening to people say "I just want to see my team win the series before I die".  On the same note, do you think I could still say this about the royals even if I was only a year old at the time?  hmm

He was offered a job as an adviser to Dayton Moore, but he turned it down so he could go to Chicago.  :x

Who cares?  Now Buddy can go fuck up someone else's team -- moreover, a division rival.  This is great news.

So how did everyone's Royals team do vs. their predictions?  Vegas said 66 wins.  They had 69.  Py-thag data (runs scored vs. runs allowed) says they should've won 74.  Here were my predicitons on January 5:

_________
Apr/Sep -  Royals open up with Alex Gordon at 3B.
True

Improve to 73-89 record.
Not quite.  I was thinking Py-thag maybe.  Never doubt Vegas

  1.65M idiots go out there.
1.62M idiots.  A real nice improvement of ~300K from last year.

Gil Meche goes 10-11  4.86ERA and 156K.
9-13  3.67ERA ()  156K.

Sweeney hurts back opening up piece of mail, goes .264-11-45 and blames Glass one more time for not putting up a good team.
.260-7-38.  Even worse.  Not sure how he got hurt this time.

David Riske assumes closer role after injury to Dotel and has very good season with 2.87 and 15 saves.
Dotel was hurt first two months, like clockwork.  Riske didn't get the closer spot (Soria did) but still had an excellent year:  2.45ERA with 4 saves.

top prospect Luke Hochevar suffers arm injury, misses most of season.
Was healthy, but ineffective at AAA.

Let's not bring Capt. Back-Ache into these arguments.  You could justify ANY contract, when you compare it to that turd.

I don't really feel like digging up my old posts, but if memory serves I had expected 72-75 wins but held out hope for .500 based on their having played much closer to .500 for the final four months of last season and ostensibly getting better this past offseason.  Clearly that was just a pipe dream, but the 72-75 wasn't too far off the mark.  Maybe next season, if the pitching can at least remain where it was this season and the offense improves, they can work toward hitting 81 wins.  I have to have something to hope for, right?

So?  I think we'd all agree that Sweeney's contract was a mistake too.  There's no reason to do it again.
