Re: TIME TO FREAK OUT AGAIN ABOUT CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT! TH
Are you trying to make the case that the Big 12 is better than the ACC because of percentage of Top 25 teams? so, in your opinion, the conference with the current #1 team is worse than the Big 12?
Would you care to compare the number bowl bound teams from each BCS conference and see where the Big 12 ranks?

TV ratings data.

Big 12 ratings not good.
Mizzou comes in at number 21 - fairly medicore but better than Texas.

Plowed ground. Scroll up 10 or 20 pages to where it was discussed last year.AllThingsKC wrote:Are you trying to make the case that the Big 12 is better than the ACC because of percentage of Top 25 teams? so, in your opinion, the conference with the current #1 team is worse than the Big 12?

I've had the popcorn out while watching this thread over the past several posts. Too much fun. But the most entertaining thing in this thread are the posts made years ago. Lots of good stuff back in 2009 and just after.
The big 12 is definitely here to stay for a while at least. But as a Mizzou fan I'm very happy to no longer be part of it.

Going with the whole normalization thing, the Big 12 has the most rated games per team.knucklehead wrote:TV ratings data.

In the mighty mountain west conference. Northwest Missouri would have done quite well in that conference too...Highlander wrote:And I do not know if you are intentionally trying to be your usual flippant self with the uninformed comment about TCU. TCU has had pretty incredible recent success with back to back BCS bowl games in 2009 and 2010
Carry on though.

Uh, right. The pollsters saw fit to vote TCU #2 in the country at the end of the year - they beat the Big 10 champion that year in the Rose Bowl. Boise State from the mighty mountain west easily beat SEC east winner Georgia, in Atlanta no less, the following year.KCtonic wrote:In the mighty mountain west conference. Out of curiosity, why does anyone care which conference is better? It seems like a sad, weird proxy argument for school rivalries.

It doesn't really matter which conference is better and it actually has little to do with school rivalries.chaglang wrote:Out of curiosity, why does anyone care which conference is better? It seems like a sad, weird proxy argument for school rivalries.
The discussion is more about if the Big 12 can remain stable/successful long-term. If so, why? If not, why not? Everyone has an opinion on that.

Speaking of which, the Big 12 has won the Big 12/SEC Challenge with 2 games to play.
Re: TIME TO FREAK OUT AGAIN ABOUT CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT! TH
The Big 12 is as good as, if not better than the SEC. The SEC has two teams that could compete for the conference title in any conference in Alabama and Auburn. It is not a given they would beat out OU, OSU or Baylor in the Big 12 this year. They have five teams in MU, USC, LSU, and Texas A&M that would probably be in the top half of any conference. It is not a given that any of those teams would beat out either Texas or K-State in the Big 12. Georgia is comparable to Texas Tech. The Mississippi schools, Florida, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and Arkansas are awful. Last year, the Big 12 was better than the SEC top to bottom.AllThingsKC wrote:Are you trying to make the case that the Big 12 is better than the ACC because of percentage of Top 25 teams? so, in your opinion, the conference with the current #1 team is worse than the Big 12?

I don't think that this is by design, but while the Big 12 is currently built for determining an honest champion, without regard to placing teams in the national championship game, the SEC is currently designed to give its teams the best possible opportunity for a chance at the championship. SEC teams play an eight game schedule, starting them out with four non-conference games. While some teams have in state rivals with ACC schools, most can roll up four wins against cupcakes to start off. Then, they miss five teams from the opposite division, minimizing head to head games between quality teams. Finally, they all seem to save one cupcake for late in the season, giving their key players an opportunity to rest and recuperate while Big 12 players have been going through the grind of playing each team in conference for nine weeks, and not having the opportunity to take some time off to rest. This is what cost K-State last year, a team that probably would have beat Alabama, and probably cost Baylor this year.
The key to the SEC that has allowed Missouri to have the success they have had this year is their placement in the SEC East, which is probably slightly worse than the ACC Coastal. To get to the SEC title game, in a conference where no decent team should not ever not make a bowl, they only had to play four bowl teams! By contrast, the Big 12, which is designed for teams to knock each other out of the top ten and out of bowl contention, the top teams needed to play five bowl teams this year and eight last year.

Take a look at how many bowl-eligible teams the top SEC teams played this year and compare that with the Big 12's top teams.

Both conferences will get two BCS teams, probably none in the championship. Mizzou on the outside looking in. Sucks for them.AllThingsKC wrote:Take a look at how many bowl-eligible teams the top SEC teams played this year and compare that with the Big 12's top teams.

At least West Virginia gets to watch Mizzou's bowl game on TV while wondering why the ACC and SEC rejected them. UPGRADE!beautyfromashes wrote: Mizzou on the outside looking in. Sucks for them.

So, does Mizzou go to the NRA Bowl, the NASCAR Bowl or the Robert E. Lee Bowl?

Re: TIME TO FREAK OUT AGAIN ABOUT CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT! TH
We will find out tomorrow what bowl Mizzou gets. They might get a Big 12 bowl since the Big 12 is unable to fill their 7 automatic bowl bids. The SEC has 10 bowl eligible teams. I hope there's enough bowl games to go around.
Fun fact: Mizzou has more wins this season than TCU and WVU combined. What an upgrade.

Not surprising. Same percentage for a 10 team league vs. 16.

Re: TIME TO FREAK OUT AGAIN ABOUT CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT! TH
Maybe I'm not meant the understand the logic that "the Big 12 is as good or better than the SEC from top to bottom."
To me, I look at:
# of ranked teams (and where they're ranked)
# bowl eligible teams
# of games played against ranked opponents
# of game played against bowl eligible teams
But, to each his own. I guess there's no one true way to determine which conference is better, since there's so many ways to look at it.

The SEC has 14 teams.beautyfromashes wrote:Not surprising. Same percentage for a 10 team league vs. 16.
