Joplin
Looks like KC's neighbor to the south took a direct hit from an F4 (at least) tornado tonight. Damage looks pretty extensive.

Re: Joplin
A Missouri Southern track coach I know just barely missed it.
Apparently it was sheer luck of his daughter throwing a temper tantrum, necessitating them to leave a restaurant; 10 minutes later that neighborhood got totaled.
Missouri has been taking a beating from Mother Nature lately.

Re: Joplin
As of right now, 24 people have died. I've never seen tornado damage this bad before.
KC is the way to be!
Re: Joplin
They've estimated 75-80% of Joplin is just "gone." Twenty-four dead so far and more expected. And a small town, Reading, Kansas was pretty much wiped-out too. Very sad.Highlander wrote: Looks like KC's neighbor to the south took a direct hit from an F4 (at least) tornado tonight. Damage looks pretty extensive.

Another estimate said 20%. It's just a guessing game at this point.

Re: Joplin
Know quite a few from Joplin since they have places with me at Grand Lake. All but one couple (lived by high school) are accounted for. Minor damages at their homes except one had home totaled.
Will receive more personal updates this weekend.

Re: Joplin
I've read that it is now tied for the biggest death toll from a single tornado. The records, albeit a little morbid, are also probably a little subjective because we know a lot more about storms that hit in an era of high resolution radar and video cameras than back before 1960. I am wondering how last month's Tuscaloosa tornado is not showing up as one of the most destructive as I understood the death toll to be around 140.
An F4 in even a relatively dense urban area can produce frightening results.

Re: Joplin
That may have been from multiple tornadoes. The thing about the one in Joplin was that it was a single tornado cell.

Thanks. My SUV lost two windows while parked at Lambert. The airport and surrounding areas looked like a war zone.NDTeve wrote: I think it was an EF2 or EF3
