Note the VFW building in the background before its 1976 exterior "modernization."

Are you certain about that date? My father had his office in the VFW building until sometime in the late 1970s when he moved to the Congress building. He definitely was at VFW in the late 1960s, and my recollection was the remodel was complete at that time. Maybe however the remodel was the impetus for his move. I'll ask him.

I was living at 32nd and Central. I watched the remodeling and north stairwell construction from my porch.

Cars and streetcar heading south on Main Street near 31st Street in 1957. The Jeserich Building is in the background on the northeast corner of Main and 31st. A business called Kaufman's is selling Venetian blinds in that building, and Ward Hardware to the north of it.

The buildings on the right behind the streetcar were demolished. The Chidren’s Center for the Visually Impaired is there now.

Businesses on the east side of Main at Westport Road in 1957. On the far right is a Milgrim's grocery store.

It was a hotel from 1938 to 1983.

The menu art site says 1940s.

Thanks Fang. Was thinking must be 1940s by the prices. The futuristic cars lead me to think 1950s. But that seemed much to late.

Welch rarebit on melba toast a retro item to bring back. Scotch Woodcock might work today too, a modern take anyway. Old KC menus would be a great source of ideas for local restaurateurs looking to differentiate, modified for modern tastes while respecting the original.

I'm in for the penguins playing musical instruments while I eat.

Kansas City used to have a lot of chop suey restaurants during this era too. Bring those back.

Chop suey eventually turned into bastardized American Chinese that became a racial insult (or proceeded depending on view) so not so sure about that. Not as bad as bringing back black face minstrel shows but in the ballpark. Now it's just called 'stir fry' with countless forms and still around.

You have no sense of farce.

farce /färs/
noun: farce; plural noun: farces

a comic dramatic work using buffoonery and horseplay and typically including crude characterization and ludicrously improbable situations.

Sarcasm detector momentarily broken I guess, perhaps the wine. Not exactly a term to bring up lightly sarcastically, especially from someone who basically never posts farces. Will give you benefit of doubt.

Hey fang- where did you find those pictures? I might be interested in getting the penguin room one as a picture/poster. It’s pretty great.

If you ever wondered why your luggage tags at Kansas City's airport say MCI instead of KCI, this is why.

Mid-Continent Airlines, The Chief Route North and South
...
By 1950, Mid-Continent serviced over 30 cities out of its Kansas City headquarters, mostly to destinations in the states bordering the Mississippi River Valley from Minnesota to Louisiana.

Following the devastating flood of 1951 in Kansas City, the company, along with TWA, sought out ground away from the river to establish a new airport. At the time, TWA’s overhaul base was located in the old Mitchell Aircraft B-25 manufacturing facility at Fairfax. Ground was secured in Platte County and the new base was christened Mid-Continent Airport to honor the roots of Mid-Continent Airlines.
