I'm starting a thread for posting old postcards of Kansas City.

We will begin with a series of advertising postcards from J.J. Foster, saddlery.

J.J. Foster mansion at 20th and Woodland, near where Lincoln Prep High School is today. One could call it the "house that Witch Hazel" built.

It was at E. 15th (Truman Road) and Cleveland.  I think part of it is used now by the U.S. Post Office as a sorting facility.

The Phoenix Bar was located on the SE corner of 5th and Broadway where the freeway entrance is today.

This picture is so depressing.  All those businesses in that stretch that is now dominated by large office towers.

The Lincoln Theater on E. 19th between Forest and Lydia was the epicenter of the black community. The theater also served as a local jazz venue.  The building was designed by the local architecture firm of the Boller Brothers, which also designed the Apollo, Warwick, Benton theaters in Kansas City; Rio in Overland Park; Aztec/Mission/Fine Arts Theater in Shawnee; the Granada theaters in KCKS and Lawrence; the Hollywood Theater in Leavenworth; and the Missouri theaters in St. Joseph and Columbia.  Along with Edward Tanner, they designed the Plaza Theater (Restoration Hardware is there now), and were supervising architects for the Thomas Lamb-designed Midland Theater.  The Lincoln was demolished sometime after the 1950s.

The Auditorium Theater was at E. 9th and Holmes, and was also known as the Warder's Grand Theater for a short time.

One of my favorite images of Kansas City.

Awesome!  I love seeing this old photos/post cards of the city!  It's amazing to see what we had and lost; and what we had....and still have.

I grew up at County line and Mohawk, right under the approach for Municipal. Always remember the Constellations roaring and rumbling in over our head, so close you could see the passengers in the windows.
