Note the VFW building in the background before its 1976 exterior "modernization."

Are you certain about that date? My father had his office in the VFW building until sometime in the late 1970s when he moved to the Congress building. He definitely was at VFW in the late 1960s, and my recollection was the remodel was complete at that time. Maybe however the remodel was the impetus for his move. I'll ask him.

I was living at 32nd and Central. I watched the remodeling and north stairwell construction from my porch.

Cars and streetcar heading south on Main Street near 31st Street in 1957. The Jeserich Building is in the background on the northeast corner of Main and 31st. A business called Kaufman's is selling Venetian blinds in that building, and Ward Hardware to the north of it.

The buildings on the right behind the streetcar were demolished. The Chidren’s Center for the Visually Impaired is there now.

Businesses on the east side of Main at Westport Road in 1957. On the far right is a Milgrim's grocery store.
