That and the Old Folks Lounge (just 6 blocks west) are on my short list of unfinished business in KCMO. I'm trying very hard to work up the courage to stop by both of them for a drink. :)

When I was a kid, very young kid we lived 4 houses from there, (23rd and chelsea) I would go in with my dad and sit at the bar and flirt with the bartender and got to play shuffle board alot. I must have been three at the time. My grand parents lived at 24 and quincy and my grandpa would stop at the bar every night at 27th and quincy and have two voda tonics before heading home at 4:45 like clock work for 20 years.

How do they stay in business. They don't have an off-street parking lot. :D

Is Country's still open? Wow!

Played league pool there and hung out quite a bit back in the late '90's. Run by a guy named "Country". Pretty shady neighborhood. Bar was definitely a dive, but I never had any problems or really even seen any problems there. Reminded me a lot of Michael's on 40 Hwy. Except without the strippers who'd pour your beer by sticking the bottle under their boobs and tilting sideways.

I remember when it was a biker bar in the 70's after the owner's son got killed it kind of changed.

Come on, for real? Only one dive bar downtown?
What bars do Ragers seek out down town? Been many years for me Drinking in KC. Trieing to remember where I went when back in town taking pictures with Tosspot.
Don't consider Flying Saucer a dive bar so that ones out. Had many drinks at Grinders.in my mind kind of a dive bar feel.

All of those so-called dive bars used to be dive bars before they became hipster bars. I think there are still real dive bars in NE and Independence and probably Gladstone. Hope the hipsters don't find them.

Three faves not on that list:

Lucky Boys (albeit the very definition of the true old dive reborn as hipster dive - still an awesome spot)
Pat's Pub (NKC)
Jockey Club (Riverside)

There aren't many bars in the Historic Northeast anymore. Askew Inn closed recently for good. I think Teri's Bigger Jigger, the Shady Lady, and Baccala are it.

While not a dive bar, Flying Saucer took a dive...as in went out of business.
Caddy Shack is not downtown per se but it's a dive-ish kind of pizza/bar establishment.

what is the definitional difference between a dive bar and a hipster bar? likelihood of getting stabbed or offered illicit drugs? average age of denizens or tightness of jeans?

Dive bar: crappy beer and cheap wells are consumed unironically and are in the clientele's budget
Hipster bar: crappy beer and cheap wells are consumed very ironically and are much cheaper than what the clientele's budget can actually afford

A friend of mine owned the Sand Bar in Independence on 40. Most of his revenue was disability checks his customers would sign over. There was also a regular crack whore that turned $5 tricks. That's a dive bar.

It seems to me that there used to be a lot more little cocktail bars in almost every city when I was a younger man. There just don't seem to be as many in any city anymore.

I mean downtown has a few dive/hipster bars. The Peanut on 9th ST. would be considered a dive bar. The Quaff is maybe the edge of dive/hipster. The Quaff still has a bunch of old school regulars, but I admit that on FRI & SAT nights after 10pm it becomes more geared to a 20 something crowd. But those are it really. Most everything else is in PNL, Corssroads, or Rivermakret in terms of bars

The bar culture in Milwaukee is great. Seams like every four blocks in residential neighborhoods had a small corner bar.
