Grinders West
Grinders West
i took some pics today of the new grinders west restaurant. not open yet, but it's coming along.
here's the front facing 18th street.
pics of the floor. they're doing a terrazzo style treatment to the floor. blue glass in concrete. glass came from stretch's vast and now gone collection of skyy vodka bottles.
this is my favorite thing about the place. the magic color changing wall. i took a bunch of pics to show you the different colors.
they leave those on all the time so you can go down there anytime and see the light thru the windows.

Wow, this looks like it belongs in the actual 'west' crossroads, very chic. I guess Stretch found that people wanted to be around his music venue and art but wanted to eat at a nicer place?

All you need now is a disco ball and floors that light up when you dance on them and it's Saturday Night Fever all over again.

This malapropism (or so I assume) from this week's Pitch Forks newsletter gave me a chuckle:
mean, ignatius...you ought to really enjoy this joint.Grinders West, next door to the original Grinders, should be serving sandwiches, soups and other deli staples by the end of the month. As Fat City reported, the restaurant will be atheistically nicer than the original Grinders;

I can see a Westside Story like scene happening outside in the courtyard. The bikers vs. the yuppies or maybe the roller girls vs ballet girls Sweet. There is even a stage..... I can do the screenplay anybody want to take on the music???

Re: Grinders West
We stopped in last night to sample the fare and I must say that I am very impressed! We enjoyed samples of sandwiches, salads, soups, pasta and side dishes. Everything we tried was top notch. Great quality, great flavor. GW has an executive chef who worked previously at Hotel Phillips and the P&L. He was a great guy to talk to and obviously passionate about his food.
The menu looks wonderful. Lots of great salads, all of which were on display and looked delectable. Several great sandwich creations, plus a build-your-own option. The menu and pricing is comparable to the Mixx, although I think GW offeres more variety.
This ain't your pizza and tater tots Grinders .
Prices aren't inexpensive, but are in-line with the food quality. Sandwiches average about $9 and salads about $8.
Opening Sunday from what I understood. Go check it out!

Re: Grinders West
We took a stroll through last night. They weren't serving when we got there, but it looks like a very, very cool space. I love the artist tables, especially. Will definitely been back. Of course, I have not yet been to the regular grinder's either (for shame!). We tried yesterday, but there wasn't a seat in the place.
Re: Grinders West
Grinders West is serving now..LIMITED MENUE while they figure out the computer system...After our next delivery of Dietz & Watson arrives we will have another soft opening..Then blow open the doors and will have a fancy NOW SERVING sign.. Re: Grinders West
Went back today for lunch and was not disappointed. In addition to having a nice chat with Stretch about his latest adventures, we had a couple of wonderful sandwiches.
One word - BACON! If you like bacon, you have to order a BLT or Club or something else with bacon. It is so good. Well cooked and seasoned by the chef with brown sugar and black pepper to give it a great smoky, sweet, spicy flavor. Yum.
My only gripe is that soft drinks are sold by the can or bottle and the water glasses are on the small side.
Total, before tip, for two sandwiches (with side) and two cokes was $24.

The food in this place is quite good. A few friends & I swung by for lunch the other day, ordering Ahi Tuna salads, steak salads, and a big pastrami sandwich. There was some sort of au gratin style potato dish that was awesome. Delicious food all around.
