Take out suggestions

Post by chingon »

My wife works in midtown, we live in Waldo.  I feel like we've exhausted our take out options between about 31st and 85th.  Any suggestions?  I should probably mention that I am open to all input in terms of ethnic foods, vegetarian offerings, and more standard American fare.  I will not, however, buy food from national chains.  Local franchises of the Bo Lings, Minsky's variety are acceptable.  Thanks.

A friend of my mom's has purchased Kokoro Sushi right by Waldo Pizza. He's upgraded the exterior and according to my mom, his sushi is fantastic. They are a carry out place.

I heard a secondhand story about this place - its not a big deal, and I can't confirm this info, but someone was in there to purchase sushi when the sushi prep person cut themselves and started bleeding.  He tried to serve the sushi - when the patron pointed out that his blood was on it, he insisted it was the fish's blood.  Again, this is a secondhand story, but I know the person who was a customer and she wouldn't invent a story like this for what seems to be a perfectly good sushi joint.

Was it recently? The new owner hasn't owned it very long. Last summer, before he owned it, my wife and I wanted to check it out, but it was so dumpy looking that we decided to pass.

Speaking of Bo Lings, the advertisements of child labor in the Chinese food market is fucking hilarious.

Sung Son FTW. It's way, way affordable and extremely delicious. Now, only if they'd staff the place so it doesn't take ten years to order and get your ticket...

Poncho's

Man, I miss that place.  The Mexican in New York is crap.

A couple under the radar places in Midtown that I liked were:
La Croix Creole
The Philly Cheesesteak place on 39th & Walnut
The Carribean place on 39th & Baltimore

If you like gizzards, you've got to hit up Go Chicken Go (don't forget the G Sauce)

How long has there been a Fiorella's on the Plaza?  What building did it take over?

I'm going to be living around the corner from this place on thursday. I have heard a couple of posters mention this place. I've walked by it but it always looks closed. Can anyone elaborate on Mario's and are they still open or do they just have weird hours??

Thats definitely a trade up.  KC Masterpiece sauce is bad, but their food is worse.

However, I still have a little trouble supporting Fiorella's.  I bartended and served at the Freight House location for a bit.  I did not like the owners/management.  They ran that place like a giant corporate chain.

Excellent suggestions.  There are a lot of places I've either not hit up in a few years or never been to on this list.  Some of them I have been kind of peripherally aware of, but I seem to never be able to call them to mind when I'm hungry and want something quick.  Anyway, all good suggestions so far, I hope to pull myself out of the take out rut I've fallen into.  You guys are my gyros.

Jerusalem Bakery on 43rd
Joe's pizza in Westport
Oklahoma Joes BBQ on 47th and Mission

La Cucina di Mamma

Brookside Market has some decent prepared meals as well. They usually have a pasta dish, fish dish and meat/poultry dish each day.  I love their baked chicken which is available everyday.  Plus you can pick up any needed groceries.
