This is why I wish some local restaurant executive with a pulse on local restaurant runnings (Joyce) could warn us of potential closings. We could have all hit up Beignet and given some much needed CPR to keep it going in the short term. I know all restaurants are hurting, but don’t let the first announcement of a potential closing be the actual announcement.
i had a similar initial reaction. in practice though what's keeping every single restaurant from leaking that they've got problems? even if only a quarter of them did, you're right back at square one because the emergency support is too diluted across the reduced demand to make a meaningful impact.
Beignet's problems could have been accelerated a bit due to their Westport location failing. But I tend to agree with you - hard to imagine the "to-go" demand doing enough.

FWIW, anecdotally, Fox & Pearl seemed busy for to-go business on Sunday. Burger/Fries/Tallboy - $15. Not terrible.

The thing about huge downturns like this is it provides an awesome time to start a business. Sure, we will lose some places but it also opens up prime locations at reduced rent. I’m personally happy Brio on the Plaza night go under. That place has been tired for a long time. Maybe something more vibrant and better will go in that location now. Time for some fresh blood.

You are so right, this is an excellent time to start a restaurant.

This pic is from 1977 and I can't find addresses of any of the businesses shown, but based on where 224 W would be on a typical east-west block I would guess it's likely the bar that in 1977 is called "Peyton Place". Though it could also be "The Other Room" (center) or the go-go girls place (name cut off) on the left corner.

Does anyone remember a bar called The Newsroom or something similar? I remember going there with the other members of my college newspaper when we attended the Missouri College Media Awards in 2005, but I wasn't living in KC at the time and can't remember exactly where it was. I think it might have been on Broadway.

This would have been among the buildings demolished around 1984 for the current Marriott DT (not the newer Muehlebach addition, but the old Vista hotel). This was a big early 1980s redevelopment scheme, Mayor Berkeley era.
