Never one to waste a perfectly good sub, this is a shout out to downtown Shawnee. Lots going on here,

Transport Brewing, Servaes Brewing, McLains Bakery just opened and Jill Cockson's (Swordfish Tom's) latest invention, Drastic Measures, is slated to open this summer.

Nieman Road has been reconfigured with a road diet and streetscaping. Old Shawnee Pizza will be expanding and creating an outdoor patio.

Get the Aztec Theater open and you will have reached some sort of singularity!

To accommodate downtown businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, Shawnee city staff on Monday proposed a plan similar to what Leawood now offers for the food and drink service industry: Extended outdoor seating. Shawnee’s plan would include parklets.

I wish they'd give Johnson Drive the same diet they gave Nieman. Not sure I'd feel comfortable in the parklet as currently configured.

Sunflower Development Group planning to build 5-story residential complex on site of former Wonderscope Children’s Museum
A new residential development is on the horizon for the site of the former Wonderscope Children’s Museum near downtown Shawnee.

Sunflower Development Group, based in Kansas City, Missouri, tentatively plans to build a 5-story apartment complex with 185 to 190 market-rate units at 5700 King St.

Jason Swords, a partner with Sunflower Development Group, said all plans are preliminary and subject to change. At this point, Sunflower plans to invest $45 million in the project.

“Our development plan is not 100% completed yet,” Swords said, noting that they could present a formalized plan to the Shawnee planning commission in the next two months.

Judging by the furious discussion on Nextdoor, citizens are not happy! Lots of NIMBYs in there. Councilwoman Tracy Thomas is calling the mayor a socialist. This city is something else.

Not surprised by the NIMBYS-I live in Shawnee and there’s an influential group of “good ole boys” (& gals) that are against anything that pulls Shawnee into the present. I’m totally surprised that the downtown Nieman Road project through downtown Shawnee was accomplished. Downtown Shawnee needs this kind of development to increase density & spur further projects that will support the larger downtown plan. The political leadership that opposes this progress wants Shawnee to stay exactly the same as it has for decades. Luckily we have a faction led by the mayor and others that refuse to acquiesce to them and have taken a more progressive approach.
Downtown Overland Park, Merriam and Lenexa (Center City) are moving past Shawnee in this regard. The NIMBYS bitch about taxes and then oppose projects like this that would ultimately increase the tax base without requiring ever expanding infrastructure investments (and higher taxes to build it).

Totally agree Shawnee needs more density, but can't say I'm thrilled with that location.

3 block west of Nieman and 2 blocks north of Johnson Drive. Plenty of spots right up front I'd like to see filled first.

Agreed but I’ll take anything within walking distance of the downtown core. Hopefully this would lead to more investment in sites closer to Nieman & Johnson Drive, kind of like the developments in downtown OP.

I understand resistance to the size and location, but there's an awful lot of people in Shawnee who like to complain about "crime" and throw around "Section 8" like it's a slur anytime someone tries to build an apartment complex in town.

I wish something could be done to replace the storage units, post office and florist on the northeast corner of Nieman with apartments and street-level retail. The Sixty16 development will be awfully far back from Nieman.
