Kaskaskia Island is part of Illinois, but west of the main channel of the Mississippi. There is also a portion of Illinois land west of the Mississippi adjacent to Perry County.

Rivers make great psychological & physical boundaries, but political boundaries...not so much.

There was a large section of bottom land that is now in Holt County, in Northwest Missouri, that used to be part of Kansas. After a large flood, the Missouri River shifted a couple of miles from the eastern side of the bottom to the western--leaving a large island of land on the east side of the Missouri River. This land formerly was part of Kansas, and became part of Holt County, Missouri, after 1949. Local residents of Holt County still refer to that bottomland as "the island."
A controversy over the boundary between Missouri and Kansas is made the subject of a 1949 act (Laws of Missouri 1949 page 311) wherein it is provided that "the center of the channel of the Missouri River, as its flow extends from its intersection with the fortieth parallel, north latitude, southward to the middle of the mouth of the Kansas or Kaw River" shall be the boundary between such states. The act was not to become operative unless Kansas enacted a similar law relinquishing sovereignty over lands lying on the Missouri side of the center of the channel, within two years from its effective date. The corresponding Kansas law appears in General Statutes of Kansas of 1949, sections 82a-521 to 82a-527. (1955) Where island, formed on Kansas side of Missouri river, as a result of a channel change during the flood of 1944, became attached to Holt County, Missouri, it became a part of Holt County under Laws 1949, p. 311, and corresponding Kansas and federal acts. Hall v. Hudgins (Mo.), 277 S.W.2d 637.

One can see this section of land, and a couple others that changed from one state to another in the Historical Atlas of Holt County, page 20.

The area on Google Maps that shows Brown Conservation Area is part of the section of land that used to be in Kansas.

Here is the section of Missouri that is west of the Missouri River channel near St. Joseph. The airport is on this section of land.

I wonder how this would affect Zona Rosa especially in the summer, and winter months. I was there on June 26th and it was hot that day, and I noticed the shopping center was pretty much dead at the time that I was there. I also noticed that the trees there are not yet mature enough to provide much shade, and there are not enough green spaces.
I like the idea of outdoor shopping, but in KC it has to be done right for the extreme climate. I think I would have eliminated the automobile roadway through Zona Rosa, and made it a more marketplace like setting with awnings and canopies so you get that outdoor feel, but are protected from the elements.
So, with a possible new Metro North Mall, Zona Rosa may have to rethink their current approach, and fix what is wrong.

Zona Rosa should add more appartments not suew if they have space to do it but maybe on top of some of the parking garages. Adding 3 floors of appartments would be awesome plus they would have some potential clients right there.

Is Trader Joe's coming to new Metro North mall?
A social media report that Trader Joe’s is coming to the new Metro North mall is feeding the hopes of Northland fans of the popular specialty grocery chain.

But the mall’s developer, MD Management Inc., says there’s no deal yet.

“We are talking to every major tenant about our projects in the Northland, but no announcement is imminent on the (Trader Joe’s) subject below,” the company said in a written response to questions about the Facebook report. “Therefore, we do not have a comment at this time.”

Metro North Mall to be replaced with a new enclosed mall

http://m.bizjournals.com/kansascity/new ... tml?r=full
"People say the lifestyle center is the mall of the future," Hayes said. "But if you poll the public, you will hear the opposite."

The shopping public demands more climate-controlled retail experiences, he said. But the new Metro North Mall, which will get a new name due to the negative perception attached to the current one, "won't be your grandmother's mall," Hayes said.

To compete with Internet shopping, next-generation malls must include attractions that generate excitement, he said. Hayes said MD Management was still researching the types of attractions to include at Metro North but mentioned two — a courtyard for events in front of the new mall and a theater/entertainment complex behind it — during Wednesday's meeting.

He also shared PowerPoint slides of the new mall concept, which calls for 900,000 to 950,000 square feet of retail space within a curved mall layout and pad sites.

I don't see MD Management doing anything good with that. I'm amazed that company still exists honestly.

Stupid. Who are these people they are polling who want enclosed shopping malls? I don't see this succeeding at all. Old school plans developed by old school people who are afraid of change.

If this is just a renovation, then so be it. I don't think it will succeed, but whatever. Now if they are tearing down the mall to build a new mall with a new name, then I'm going to be pissed. Who the hell are these people?

it's the focus on who they sign that will matter. there's plenty of outdoor "malls" doing horrible across KC.

metro north didn't collapse because the format was bad, it collapsed because it was never modernized and they didn't get good tenants to stay/replace ones that left.

Oak Park Mall is a good example of tenant quality working.

Wonder what happens if Macy's back out of this Metro North "plan". They are now officially closing their Metcalf South store http://www.kansascity.com/2014/01/08/47 ... ation.html

Except it's more of a double strip mall now. There's very little mall left.

Isn't that the only Macy's in the Northland? I'm sure there's other viable sites (as our resident oracle will tell you, no doubt).
