I really have no purpose in posting this other than to say that I have come to realize that I really, really like North Kansas City.

It used to be, even recently, that NKC's existence was something I never gave any thought to. In my mind it was just that run-down industrial area north of the river. But in the past few days I've come to realize how much time I actually spend there. My bowling league is there. I go to their big park to play tennis. I go to their fantastic community center 3 times a week to work out. Whenever I want fast food I usually go to NKC. I need gas, NKC. The 24 hour Osco there has bailed me out several times since I discovered it. And recntly I have actually paid attention when passing through and noticed that they have a lot of really interesting family-owned retail shops.

This city that I never gave any thought to turns out to be one I visit and patronize nearly every day of the week, and outside of home I probably spend as much time there (if not more) as any other neighborhood.

If they had a grocery store and a department store, I'd probably almost never have a reason to venture more than 3 miles from home.

That's all, you can move along to another thread now. :)

Hey just think if you were a Clay County resident you could visit the DMV located inside the Petsmart on Burlington. Seriously, check out Kelso's Pizza on the main drag. And maybe down the road if you have a heart attack or something you can see my wife's group at NKC Hospital  Oh wait she'll be a housewife by then..

NKC is one of the most vibrant and diverse little areas in the KC area.

Any Missouri resident can use any license bureau office in the state. I live in Jackson County and usually use the NKC office inside Petsmart. It's near Midtown and the lines usually aren't as long as the office in the state office building in downtown.

I actually tried to use it once back in January, but all the DMVs decided to take two days off for MLK Day while everyone else just got one day off (or, like most people, no days off). So by the time I had another chance to go to one the downtown DMV was closer.

North KC is built on expolited money. All that development has come at the expense of exploited gamblers. I have to admit that there is nice streetscape and yeah I've noticed a few locally owned businesses. As you guys can probably tell, I'm anti casino. I think they are a massive means of exploitation of those who can not afford it and thus all those projects are paid for by disproportional payments. I find it disgusting and sickening and the state of Missouri should be ashamed to have allowed this explotative business set foot in the state.

I'm anti-morons who blow their money at casinos.

Anyway, NKC needs a grocery store to become complete. Maybe that will happen once the new urbanism project--claiming to actually be an extension of NKC's urban fabric--is finished. I don't remember what that project is called. I think Northgate Village. I'm interested in seeing the end results. I'm all for truly new urbanism that is an extension of an already urban area rather than so-called new-urbanism projects plopped at a major intersection.

You are not a moron because you are an addict.

However, if we ban gambling and the profits it brings, why not ban alcohol also? I am very tired of the governement protecting me from myself. But, I agree, that it is a completely different issue when the government profits from my addiction or problem.

No need to ban casinos. If people want to piss their money away, I say let them do it.

I agree, I "piss" my $100 every 2 to 3 weeks at casinos INSTEAD of pissin' my money away on expensive AMC movies and over-priced chain restaurants. And if and when I get lucky, the payoff is always worth it. I enjoy playin' cards for cash, I consider that entertainment. But I agree, there are morons that spend their whole paychecks on table gambling and tight slots. To be frank though, they can implode the Isle of Capri casino, that place is a dump and draws the poor people from the Eastside dreamin' of becoming rich quick. If you haven't ever been, check out the other three casinos (especially Argosy and Ameristar)...really nice joints.

BTW, LEGALIZE MARIJUANA!!!

If you don't like gambling, don't gamble, its that simple. The same with strip joints, alcohol, cigarettes, illegal narcotics. Just because they are available doesn't mean that you or anyone else is being forced to use it. The whole mentality that we are too ignorant to make decisions on our own is what makes Kansas specifically suck. In my opinion 24 hour a day, 7 day a week alcohol shouldn't be a problem. I think if Kansas, specifically KCK, jumps on this and legalized gambling with no limits fast, it can truly burn the Missouri gambling and club scene.

I know this isn't what The UG wants to do, but the problem with the UG and Kansas is that they think too small. I am thinking of legalizing gambling in Wyandotte County to the same extent Nevada has legalized gambling. I mean slot machines everywhere from gas stations to k-mart. Then we hit the night club scene with the 24-7 alcohol. and bring strip clubs back and KCK becomes the midwest Vegas. Basically Missouri will be forced to adapt in order to compete, or we will eat them alive.

Don't worry Missouri forumers, Kansas is too weak to go all the way.

That might be takin' it too far, but my wife would certainly be 100% for the idea of legalized gambling everywhere.

I spent some time this week walking around NKC. When (if) my wife and I someday become empty nesters I would give NKC a strong look as a place to buy a home.

I hear many of you talk about and comparing other cities…… and IMO NKC has the layout and feel of an old Chicago neighborhood.

It is the only place in KC that has that Chicago feeling. It is partly the flat lay of the land but also it is the dense mix of traditional retail, strip retail, homes, apartments, schools, churches, parks, library, fitness center, small offices, railroads, wholesale and factories all within a pleasant walking distance. A big plus is NKC well defined boundaries a river, a bluff, and two easy to access interstates.

I walked everywhere...always wanting to see what was around the corner and felt very safe and noticed how clean an area NKC is for its age. The blocks are small and also well defined. There is a great view of downtown from almost every street.

But I didn't see a single home For Sale!

I did see a possible problem that many older Chicago hoods have faced.......a single newer McMansion built on a small lot surrounded by smaller NKC homes

I love NKC, but I do not like most of Northtowne. I love North Kansas City's downtown area--very urban for a suburb. I love the little residential area just behind Save-a-lot, because the close bungelow houses with sidewalk lined streets remind me of the type of neighborhoods I grew up in. All suburbs should take notes from NKC
