Re: North Kansas City
The Iron District.
A new shipping container food and retail park, 16th & Iron St.
This was new to me but a web search shows a story in Feast from July: http://m.feastmagazine.com/the-feed/kan ... 94c61.html
I was at a pop-up for Kind Food (kindfoodkc.com) and they told me they will be a tenant there, hoping for a spring opening. Damn good crispy coconut "B"LT wrap, btw. I haven't been by that location in some time but sounds like work has started. They mentioned a tower up on the corner that was one (tall) or two container(s) on its side.
Sounds like another cool thing for NKC.

Re: North Kansas City
Iron District opens today in NKC - excited to check it out.

Also, have come to love Mitch e Amaro, the spirits/bar supply store and small cocktail bar on Armour/Swift in the old Le Monde bakery space. Low key, high quality cocktails from among a massive menu, free tastings every Friday. Kind of a hidden gem, and the type of place I hope to see more of in NKC. Had a cocktail at Campground recently and asked where to find the rum they were using, and Mitch was recommended - so the word must be getting out amongst industry folk to some degree.

So I've been in the afternoon once to check out the amaro selection, how much space at the bar? I must have totally missed it.

Re: North Kansas City
It's a small bar in the back corner of the store, probably 8-10 seats at bar, and then a bar table or two and a lounge area with chairs. To your point, doesn't seem to be well known as a bar, so has never been all that busy when I've gone (typically Friday evenings), though the bar seats do fill up quickly. Check it out!So I've been in the afternoon once to check out the amaro selection, how much space at the bar? I must have totally missed it.

Brother from Brooklyn in town. We went to Iron District for late lunch and liked it. The raw edginess of place works, it's all foodie leaning. Didn't expect the shops. Had a very good bowl though a bit pricey for the portion. Will go back. Hope it can survive winter.

Re: North Kansas City
Iron District's hours might be just as big a threat to its survival as opening just before winter. The hours are confusing... especially the bizarre gap on Saturdays. Then each individual vendor can set their own hours within those already limited and confusing hours. So there's really no clear way what's of knowing what's open when. That's one of the easiest ways to kill a business.

This. Hours are all over the place and not well-thought through at all.scooterj wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2019 10:25 am Iron District's hours might be just as big a threat to its survival as opening just before winter. Lunch from 11a-2p Tuesday-Friday.⠀
Tuesday-Friday at 7a for breakfast from Morning Day Cafe KC
Friday happy hour/dinner from 4-8p⠀
Saturdays 9a-1p and 4-8p⠀
If this isn't true they need to figure this out quick, because their advertising implies except for one exception everyone is open all these hours

And 8pm closing is pretty limiting for the dinner crowd.

Re: North Kansas City
A few NKC updates:
- Hawaiian Bros opened in the old Allen Chevrolet dealer at Armour/Burlington. The building has been completely renovated into multiple retail/office spaces. Did a nice job on the restaurant space in the large, former showroom at the front of the building along Armour. Have tried the Huli Huli and Honolulu chicken - food is pretty tasty, cheap and huge portions. Seems popular thus far.
- Tyler Kingston (hipster home goods) closed, believe they still have their Corinth store. Bit of a bummer, I dug their "North Kansas City" T-shirts and desperately want to see NKC support more bougie "Brooksidey" options.
- Colony cut back their daytime hours and are getting rid of coffee service. Now open at 4 PM - turning into more of a pure bar/music venue. There's no longer a good coffee shop/hangout option in the immediate area. Will miss espressos and chill after work there, as I still miss their craft brews when they were brewing in house.

Re: North Kansas City
I finally tried it a week ago and loved it. I don't think they are ever not busy.rxlexi wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 12:00 pm Hawaiian Bros opened in the old Allen Chevrolet dealer at Armour/Burlington. I really liked Colony their first couple of years, but all the changes made after the Rhino opened took away everything I loved about it. I know their Rhino model works for them and brings in a crowd, but it's a totally different place than its early years. I used to go a couple time a week, now I've pretty much forgotten they exist.rxlexi wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 12:00 pm - Colony cut back their daytime hours and are getting rid of coffee service. A couple other NKC updates:
* Old Chicago opened about a month ago, haven't been yet.
* Grain To Glass is still in the process of closing, I believe this is their final week. I already miss their Thursday evening beer tastings.
* Outlaw Cigar & Brewing posted a photo update last week. They still have a long way to go but it looks like they are doing some really cool stuff with their space.

Re: North Kansas City
I really hope NKC can begin to generate more of a Brookside vibe as well. I know it's a little tougher in the town itself has more Commercial, light industry dedicated land than residential. However the charm once you get into the neighborhoods it's closer. But again NKC housing was mostly a boom town after WWII with small tract homes to offer to troops coming home. Some of those have been torn down but a ways to go. NKC is "rich" with casino money to offer better services & such to residents. Hopefully there will be someone who has the vision to pimp the NKC brand and use it as a Brookside close to downtown.

Re: North Kansas City
What NKC needs to do is think more mixed use. It has a lot of super useful industrial but it also has a lot of end of life industrial.
The community has a lot of potential to look like the West Bottoms with lofts mixed into businesses on the ground floor.

Re: North Kansas City
NKC is the flattest city in the metro and has a coherent street grid. It could be a bicycling paradise with a little bit of infrastructure work. The scrum around the Armour project shows they still have some ground to cover politically.

Re: North Kansas City
Not sure if it's true that NKC is opening up early (May 4th) But I think they this could really help make Iron District popular if they can getting distance thing right. Honestly any place that has outdoor seating is probably at a good advantage post quarantine.

Re: North Kansas City
KCBJ reports that Sunflower development and NKC getting close to breaking ground on $49M mixed-use deal in downtown NKC next to Chicken N Pickle (18th Ave/Swift). Site is currently a public surface parking lot. 208 apartment units, 3 levels of parking, 3500sf retail on first floor. Apartments will have rooftop pool that should have some excellent views.
This is a central lot in downtown NKC near several of the more recent retail spots (CnP, Cinder Block brewery, Hawaiian Bros, Repeal 18th, etc.). Should add some much needed residential density in the heart of NKC, with excellent access to City Market and downtown KC to boot.
