And their child company Washington prime owns Town Center Plaza and recently defaulted on West Ridge Mall in Topeka and Towne West Square in Wichita. Simon still owns Towne East, which is fairly healthy.

Interesting that they're reporting on the endangerment of a church from the 1940s, and not the 1890s church at 9th and Forest currently being demolished.

Let's face the music there is not going to be anything left of the Country Club Plaza at some point probably not to far off at this rate. It will just be another glass, stucco, and concrete business district devoid of any originality.

I read that Punch Bowl Social (the entire chain) is in dire straits due to the corona virus. The article states there are concerns regarding the viability of a concept anyway. Did the plaza version of the chain ever get opened?

Before the virus a lot of they were closing after only being open a few months anyways (Texas) I think the brand was going to be screwed either way

It's basically there, but a lot of folks on here have been whistling past the graveyard for the better part of the last 3-5 years as the steady deterioration of a once proud landmark was unfolding.

The Plaza will be fine, new retailers will move in to replace any that close.

It's changed before, it used to be full of gas stations, and it will change again.

Would love to see more residential density added someday.

Hopefully Taubman gives up on Plaza and sells to a true urbane mixed use player who can adapt it with mixed residential and more neighborhoody vibe while still inviting to region.

Well, you're in luck. Taubman was already in talks to merge with Simon, the company that has dumped such area malls as West Ridge, The Hutchinson Mall, The Wichita Mall, Towne West, Independence Center, Crossroads, and Oak View. That's about the base case you can hope for at the moment as the stock for CBL Properties, owner of almost all the malls in St. Louis and Oak Park Mall, is trading at less than $0.20 at the moment.

I suppose it's possible the Plaza gets dumped for less than what Taubman paid? Would a local outfit be interested? Copaken?

Copaken got out of retail ages ago when they started sinking all five of their malls. Three, including Oak Park, were sold to CBL. Leavenworth Plaza and Mission Center were sold to other ownership. All five malls were not in the best shape when sold.

Very little chance of local ownership. I’d say the only way would be if lease rates and percentages drop so much Taubman begins to lose money and filed bankruptcy. Even then, a local buyer would probably lose out to a national name with deeper pockets.
