I'm aware of Observation Park--it has great views and actual park space. But I'd take one a little closer as well, nothing against Observation Park.

Kansas City is already blessed by numerous public park areas with glamour skyline views thanks to the topography and mostly George Kessler.

I may be jumping the gun, but so far the Westside Flats build seems like a nice addition to the area, and the final build along 17th St. will be much much nicer (IMO) than the initial renderings. After all of the arguments back and forth, EPC built underground parking with no tax abatement (after threatening to build a surface lot next door because of their inability to build underground - TBD if they will add spillover surface parking). There is no pleasing some of the NIMBYs in the Westside, but it appears that EPC did ultimately listen. I was probably in the minority in the neighborhood in that I was fine with a small commercial space, but I did have a big issue with the abatement request.

I wish they would have left that bump-out orange. I liked that pop of color.

I'm a big fan of contemporary/modern architecture, but 1800 Mercier looks terrible. The materials look cheap, and it looks like someone got punched in the face.

Facade composition is something of a lost art. The window placement and scale is pretty poor.

Genuinely curious about the quote that this is a systemic, planned thing.

A home builder in one hood being "whacked over the head" back in 2013 told a resident next door to his project that "the city asked us to make the neighborhood more upscale" when she started asking questions.

I suppose if a resident is asking you what in the hell is going on here? you might be tempted to deflect the blame on someone else.

Upon further reflection, given how much nefarious shit has been done to communities of color by all levels of government, I can understand where the suspicions are rooted. By "nefarious shit", I'm thinking specifically about the book The Color of Law.

Mattie Rhodes Plans New Westside Cultural Center
The Mattie Rhodes Cultural Center is nearing the completion of a fundraising campaign to build a new facility on downtown’s Westside at 17th and Jarboe.

The $3.4 million endeavor will allow the 126 year-old Hispanic organization to consolidate and expand its classroom, meeting and gallery space, and provide more services to both the Hispanic community and the greater metropolitan area.
