Fantasy Retrofits: Barney Allis Plaza
Re: Fantasy Retrofits: Barney Allis Plaza
Does this mean we'll be addressing the pigeon shit on 12th Street by installing a new honkey tube?

Why can't we have both?

Pigeon shit and honkey tubes? I'm pretty sure we can.

That's the joke.

Sorry, missed your intent. I hate it when people do that to me. My apologies.

Barney Allis Plaza in the 1960s.
Re: Fantasy Retrofits: Barney Allis Plaza
Such a great picture of my stomping grounds. Think it must be about 1967 by the cars. Looking at it I had the sensation of the smell of that fountain when I was floating my new boat I just bought down 12th street at Kreskies (Now K mart). Got lots of popcorn on way there at Toppsies

The Holiday Inn (now Crowne Plaza) was completed in 1968, so that year, or after. I don't see any obvious 70s cars.

Wow the plaza itself looks really pleasant in this shot. A garden

I envision the north lawn of the Liberty Memorial looking like that.TheLastGentleman wrote: ↑Mon Jan 04, 2021 11:31 pm Wow the plaza itself looks really pleasant in this shot. A garden
Anyone know why they remodeled BAP, or when it happened?

It would be interesting to see BAP timelapse of all it's many forms.
Re: Fantasy Retrofits: Barney Allis Plaza
Wonder what happened to the enormous block of black granite that was the fountain? That back wall of the KC Club/Hotel KC has always been unattractive. The new office building will make this vista more appealing.

From Historic Aerials, that design went away somewhere between 1970 and 1991shinatoo wrote: ↑Tue Jan 05, 2021 10:05 amI envision the north lawn of the Liberty Memorial looking like that.TheLastGentleman wrote: ↑Mon Jan 04, 2021 11:31 pm Wow the plaza itself looks really pleasant in this shot. The renovation was sometime in the 1980s from what I understand
Re: Fantasy Retrofits: Barney Allis Plaza
That picture of the park with the fountain and such looks great. I’ve never seen BAP look like that. Manicured park setting is awesome. I’d get behind something like a return to that and maybe even a sculpture garden dotted within. Perhaps some amenity kiosks on the outside 4 corners. Just a nice outdoor gathering space. Let the proposed cap of 670 have the park/development ideas & return BAP to simple yet beautiful green space

It reminds me of Huntington Park next to the Flood Mansion in San Francisco.

Someone posted this pic to a KC history Facebook group. It's the circa 1983 excavation for the Marriott and you can see BAP's former glory to the left.

Read more here: https://www.kansascity.com/news/busines ... rylink=cpyAn amendment added Wednesday asks that the team not only plan for a new garage and plaza, but also study “substantial alternative commercial real estate uses, including retail and office space and high-rise housing.”
