Re: Fantasy Retrofits: Barney Allis Plaza
I agree with both the boring assessment and the lack of an iconic replacement fountain. This is the front yard of KC for many meeting attendees (when and if we have meetings again) and could be so much more than what is portrayed. I’m hoping the depiction lacks more detail than what is shown. If we are truly the “City of Fountains” then put a damn fountain in this space!

Yeah let's hope that's just a blank canvas to build amenities into. I do like the elevations.shinatoo wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 9:46 amWow that is a boring refit. Looks like a Lees Summit city park. I'm optimistic that a new governance structure will raise enough money to install better amenities and introduce programming to keep the park active.

It’s presumably just a very rough draft. There are even some graphical glitches in the video

We should just make this a surface lot and put the savings into phase 1 of the highway cap park. RFP this parcel out to a developer in a few years and use those funds to help build part 2.shinatoo wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 9:46 amWow that is a boring refit. Looks like a Lees Summit city park. It’s a horribly rendered video. I suspect the final product would be better than what’s shown. That said, there does seem to be a dearth of amenities for such a Central Park.
Re: Fantasy Retrofits: Barney Allis Plaza
There will likely be a nonprofit that will raise funds to add amenities and program the space. I wouldn't get too hung up on the video. Just be happy that it's finally down at street level.horizons82 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 8:07 pm It’s a horribly rendered video. I suspect the final product would be better than what’s shown. Consultant Recommends City Close Barney Allis Garage ‘Immediately’
https://cityscenekc.com/consultant-reco ... AnNIzBV6vYA new engineering report is recommending the Barney Allis Plaza garage be immediately closed along with the Plaza above, ratcheting the pressure as the City Council explores alternatives to rebuild the aging civic asset
While the report prepared by TranSystems, a city consultant, found no “immediate structural integrity issues” in the underground garage, it cited numerous code violations, notably a non-working ventilation system and antiquated fire sprinklers.

KC Sports Comission provided testimony in support of the project and a hope for the project to be completed in time for the 2023 NFL Draft.
Positive testimony was also given by unions, firms, and many individuals which you can read at the attached link.

Plans to remodel downtown’s Barney Allis Plaza have hit a roadblock. The plan was taken off the KCMO Finance Cmte’s docket this morning. Normal process is that a vote like that holds up plan for 6 months. #BarneyAllisPlaza #KCMOCouncil #KMBC

I didn't understand his tweet. Is he saying it takes 6 months to get it back onto the docket to be voted on? Mahoney on twitter is quite a riddle most of the time.

Probably placed on the semi-annual docket?

Committee Shelves Barney Allis Plaza Rebuild Plan, Endorses Short-Term Fix
https://cityscenekc.com/committee-shelv ... jzqs9e-8WYYears of planning to redesign and rebuild Barney Allis Plaza and its underground parking were likely shelved for the foreseeable future Wednesday after a Council Committee recommended a temporary garage fix instead.
...
Instead, the Finance Committee voted unanimously to spend about $1.6 million to repair the upper two levels of the garage, about 600 spaces, to keep it operating the next two- to three years.
...
But committee members, faced with a looming budget crisis because of the economic meltdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, differed sharply on how to proceed.

Would you rather see a highway cap or a new BAP?

Re: Fantasy Retrofits: Barney Allis Plaza
is there a particular reason this choice is being presented to us? They don't seem connected at all.
Why not sell development rights to BAP instead of trying to do this ourselves and spend 2MM on a bandaid?

This is just a personal question - not related to real world. If you had to pick between the two what would you choose?KCPowercat wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 8:16 amis there a particular reason this choice is being presented to us? They don't seem connected at all.
