We have not learned, refuse to learn, and will push through the exact same thing despite the fact we have no allies

There's a write up in the star. Sounds like they're moving forward with the same plan and ask for incentives.

Teresa Loar - suddenly the champion of downtown projects. Did not expect her to be the one council member attending this morning.

The developers said they have a super majority of council votes.

She also thinks a 5-star hotel would locate in our suburbs.

I agree with the developers in one respect, this isn't a time to just throw the brakes on everything.

I don't agree they need a TIF though.

They need to dump their proposed performance hall space on Broadway. It has nothing to do with the hotel, adds a ton of cost, and locks up a space that should be built into a denser use.

I can see a Star Bond, Super TIF, spaghetti monster appearing in OP or Leawood. frankly, it makes more financial sense then the American Royal and some of the other new projects

If the sudden shift in council support is real, do we think it’s possible that this connected to KC 2026? At least in the level of, “WC said this is the 1 thing we are missing over our direct competitor. Let’s get it approved to boost our final push”.

Pre-corona, decisions were supposed to be coming this year.

Then why not just say that? Even if that's the motivation, this project does NOT deserve a Super TIF.

It won't get the Super TIF given the current political climate. Budget shortfall from pandemic, civil discord, bordering on unrest, and larger issue of racial & social injustice, mostly tied into economic inequities. It takes HUGE balls to waltz in front of city council and say your projects is mostly for the very wealthy, a-la the 1%'ers, and ask for the City to help you pay for it. Very tone deaf.

Rates are super low, secure your financing now and take advantage. Material costs are low, make your move. Maybe look to see if there could be simple things the City could do to help, to be a good partner, but Super TIF is not an option

I don’t understand how they can be so thick, it honestly would be cool to have but the ridiculous demands will never pass through

My conspiracy theory is some want this to pass so that a public uproar occurs and TIF and other incentives get banned.

That’s a conspiracy, alright. You want these tools for when they’re really needed, and I’m pretty sure every person on this council has voted for incentives since they took office.

Can they possibly be this brazen stupid? If you had the votes, just quietly go forward. Whatever votes they thought they had will surely shrink away.

The people who are behind this have done themselves no favors along the way and come across as incredibly unlikable and out of touch. Not to mention the project hardly seems worthy of the level of abatement requested in any circumstances, let alone now.

Sounds like an Ordinance has been introduced to end incentives for development except in the most distressed census tracts.
