WeWork is laying off thousands and halting all new leasing. Unclear if that will kill the Lightwell deal, which 100K space is in middle of conversion. Given it's apparently a signed lease, might proceed.

Article about Lightwell plans to become a startup hub. Moreso than just the 100K sqft of WeWork space (about 650K sqft in building). No indication there will be issues with WeWork lease given recent IPO withdrawal and restructuring, says deal is 'locked'.

Lightwell is expected to provide a three-stage system for tech-growth in Kansas City — a school for tech talent, coworking space for startups and private office space for scaling companies, explained Bataineh, vice president at Somera Road, the New York-based commercial real estate investor working to redevelop Lightwell alongside AREA.

“If we’re going to have five tech companies upstairs that are having credible funding and are growing super fast, we need a school downstairs that’s producing employees to keep them growing,” he said.

Tour of the renovation: https://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/ ... -tour.html

Some newish (?) tidbits: The new skylight will be frameless. Country Club Bank will move to the SE corner of the 2nd floor. A wooden stair used to connect to the top two floors.

What's the status with the foodie hall?

BTW, saw sign in new Wrap It Up spot across from MKE Deli, but looks like they have a long way to go.

OP food hall concept could come to downtown tower

...
Tim Barton, the developer behind the Strang Hall chef collective in downtown Overland Park, is in late-stage discussions to bring a similar concept to Lightwell, the 30-story tower at 11th and Main streets.

Should the deal close, Barton’s concept would take about 13,000 square feet on the first floor of the building and include approximately five chefs. The food hall would replace the building’s now gutted cafeteria space, which shuttered for renovations in the fall.

"Welcome to the new brand.

"A modern workplace.
A home for the creative class.
A destination for the talent of tomorrow.

"LightWell is a curated experience
for today's workforce, celebrating
wellness, offering diverse food and
beverage, and providing ample
social spaces to attract and retain
the best talent to the heart of
Kansas City's downtown."

This puffery has appeared on several inside walls. Note the odd building spelling and the Oxford comma. The expression "diverse ... beverage" feels awkward, but a new bar is a new bar.

Meanwhile, on outside doors, a photocopied notice "No Public Restrooms" has been plastered generously.

Great, I can curate my workplace at Lightwell and then curate my living at Reverb.

Do they have artisan offices there?
Real estate developers are some of the least creative professionals I've met. Even the ones who fancy themselves artists.
I know one very successful local developer who has tons of properties with the most uninspired names imaginable. I once asked him how the hell they came up with those and his reply was, "We find successful apartments/strip centers/buildings in other cities and use those names." And then I cried.
