Let's hope that skywalk track is engineered correctly.

Very impressive. I am honestly most surprised by this. I own a condo on 8th/Broadway and welcome this to the area. Hopefully it’ll be good for my property values.

The addition looks like it will be pretty ugly. I hope future expansion cover it.

I thought it would be a bigger building.
In retrospect, it might have been a better idea to use the Lyric facade as an entrance to a hotel, and build the YMCA space in the bottom floors of the hotel. The YMCA could have had its' own entrance on Central. Guests could have used the facility on a daily rate.

I have never really liked this project and now that it's nearing completion, I really don't like it. I have always thought the YMCA should be part of a new construction tower or something. This is just so awkward looking with how it scales to the old facade and the rest of the block. And what is going on with all the open space on that block now? Is that all going to be surface parking?

Yeah I thought it was going to be the same width. That looks weird.
Re: OFFICIAL - New Downtown YMCA (former Lyric Theater)
this is gonna be one of those "what the fuck were they thinking" things in the future...
Re: OFFICIAL - New Downtown YMCA (former Lyric Theater)
It looks smaller than even the new-ish Y in downtown Wichita...and that one has ground-level basketball courts that you can see into from the street/sidewalk. This looks like a building you'd go to to get your driver's license renewed.

If Crossroads Academy schools still plan to build a gymnasium at 9th and Washington, they should have worked out a deal with YMCA to have that gymnasium built a part of their complex at 11th and Central.

It looks like a prison. At least the front is of significance

Comparing it to the google maps aerial photo, it looks like they have severely shortened the depth of the building. I was actually a little relieved to the see the lot to the immediate east was already a parking lot. I hope when they get some glass up, the rear of the building looks better but overall a drop in density and pretty underwhelming project. I guess it's going to be a bare bones YMCA - will there be a pool and basketball courts?Chris Stritzel wrote: ↑Tue Mar 03, 2020 12:13 am It looks like a prison. At least the front is of significance

Re: OFFICIAL - New Downtown YMCA (former Lyric Theater)
The fact that the building doesn't extend to the length of the front facade makes it look terrible. They should have combined the downtown school gym (planned for 9th and Washington) with the YMCA project in a sharing agreement, and built a bigger building to serve both.
Re: OFFICIAL - New Downtown YMCA (former Lyric Theater)
This is the most disappointing project downtown in awhile.
