Up close photo of the building Rau is looking at. If they can make it look anything like this it would be a wonderful project

The south loop, I-670 and I-35/I-70 approx 12th to Truman including the interchanges, is around 23500 sq feet.

The entire Bartle Hall complex is about 5300 sq feet. The entire P&L + Sprint Center complex is about 5600 sq feet, including streets

So they tore out 2x two major tourist spots in terms of space to support I-670

The reconstruction of the brickwork on the top floor is done. Now they just need to clean the old brick so it matches.

Anyone know the history of the plain, white building with the decorated tower?

That’s the Bemis building, which is being turned into a parking garage with kc’s first car elevator. Bemis was a burlap bag manufacturer. In some of my earlier pictures on this thread you can see the Bemis logo at the top; a cat in a burlap bag.

Edit: Here we go

Are those four cats the descendants of the mascots of the Bemis Bag Company? :D

They look suspicious.

I wonder why the building is so plain but the tower is nicely decorated.

If this is it, it used to a look a bit more uniform - and wet - back in the day.

I’m positive that’s a different structure. The current building isn’t that old, as it’s made of reinforced concrete. What’s the date of the picture?

I thought it was painted over brick. Hard to tell on my computer screen. The photo credit lists it as the 1300 block of West 12th Street. It references the flood of 1951.

There is an item on the Neighborhood Planning & Development committee docket for rezoning a large swath of the West Bottoms around the West Bottoms Flats development to DX-10, which the supporting documents say is similar to the how parts of the Crossroads are zoned. This zoning change would also make it easier for the PIEA to provide incentives in the area.

The attachments for this ordinance mention a phase 2 development to the West Bottom Flats project that is currently under construction. This phase would renovate 2 adjacent properties at 1525 W 9th with 90 residential units, and 6,500 sqft of retail.

There is no mention of a timetable.

DX-10 allows mixed use with high(er) density. That's a good thing to see happen.

Downtown is largely DC and DX zoning

Looks like things are picking up on both sides of the twelfth street bridge. Are there plans to replace and add in sidewalks in the west bottoms?

The brick restoration and cleaning of those facades is really impressive.
