They have now added "KANSAS CITY" in smaller font under "THE STAR"

Disclaimer: "Looks good" does not equal looks great.  I've only see it during the day and still think it looks good....not great though.  Maybe they will do more to light it up at night.

Agreed....not sure if I like it.  As of now, can hardly see the blue star.  How will it light up?

Perhaps they'll do some sort of backlighting behind the "THE STAR" lettering...  If so, that would look nice.

You would think that after spending so many millions of dollars on this building, they'd want to showcase their branding and take ownership it while improving their image.

Gunfire damages windows at Star’s press plant
Three times since late January, gunfire has damaged windows at The Kansas City Star’s downtown production facility.

Employees discovered the most recent damage Thursday morning in a window on the west side of the press pavilion building at 1601 McGee St.

The two previous incidents involved damage to windows on the building’s north side, facing Truman Road.

What makes this place a target more than Sprint? Is it just highway access? Not quite as high traffic as an area? It just seems odd to me that it's always the Star when there's an equally glassy structure a block away. Somebody have a grudge?

Cruising around downtown. Hey look glass. Pop. Jump on i70 right there and gone forever. Surprising their security camera don't catch a glimpse.

McClatchy, on behalf of The Star as its parent company, is leasing the building back for 15 years with annual payments initially set at $2.8 million.

That building will probably end up being the Urban Target in 15 years.

What a deal for the buyer! Get $42m over 15 years on a $30m purchase plus you get the building at the end. You have to think the Star owner is just trying to avoid bankruptcy at this point.

I have a sinking feeling that the current tenant won’t be able to meet that obligation.

In all seriousness--in the event the Star vacates it someday, could we maybe get a flagship REI? Tons of room in there for climbing walls and all kinds of fun stuff.

In other related news, I desperately want a local philanthropist to start a competitor to the Star. It worked in New Orleans (more or less).
