I agree that a giant news ticker would have been cool; or any other large, visible sign announcing the Star's presence downtown.  The building is in the perfect location to advertise itself to SC and P&L crowds, and the walls of glass are very striking and inviting, at least from across 670.  Is there any hope for the Star to place a large vibrant sign or ticker facing the P&L?  I would think it could be a great opporunity for both the paper and the city; highly visible advertising for the Star and a more vibrant street scene and deeper connection with our local paper for the city...I'm all for it, at least.

New KC plant paying dividends

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Fifteen months after it kicked off its new plant downtown, The Kansas City Star is reaping higher ad revenues and almost $1 million in new commercial printing, officials said.
Speaking at last week's ING meeting here, Peter Ricker, The Star's vice president of advertising, said retail advertising color revenues soared 143 percent since the plant went into operation last year.
Color revenues for classified ads and other placements doubled, he said.
Additionally, The Star was able to simplify its ad rates, moving from 45,000 different ad rates to 4,500 rates since the paper's four Koenig & Bauer Commander presses went on-edition.
Commercial revenues, meantime, are fueled by the publication of Pitch, an alternative weekly, new advertising inserts and other runs, he said.
ING drew more than 200 participants to Kansas City for its three-day meeting. Newspapers & Technology will have more coverage about the show in the November issue.

I've always thought they should have a sign facing the highway. I'm certain many people have driven by there on their way east to some other place and wondered what that glass structure was, jutting out onto I-70.

they're not bad. you can do major color with them, but they are so over engineered it's just stupid. plus you are trying to run all the different hardware systems with all the different software systems. we have zero it guys. nobody that works for the star that  can write code.  it's a major clusterfuck.

Saw that there were light up solid blue stars hanging up behind the glass on the three sides of the building.  Are they still testing out different things to put up a sign?

It's definitely not holiday decorating.  It looks as if they're making a sign eventually.

From my view here, it looks like STAR is almost complete on the North Side.

Really...when I came off I-70 last night and up the Locust/Oak exit, I only saw a blue star.  There was no text yet.  I love downtown signs!

When I walked by a couple weeks ago, it looked like they had signage bits stored in the north end of the press room.  DSidn't make out what all it was.

Just for you, here's a bad one.  I don't like it.  "The Star" doesn't light up.  It looks like it's just going to be giant stick on letters.
