Seiden's Furs Appears to Be Closing

Post by FangKC »

I noticed walking past Seiden's Furs, on the NE corner of 10th and Broadway, that a sign has been posted indicating the owner is retiring and a closeout sale has begun.

That place has been an eyesore for some time.  They announced the closing a few months ago with signs on the doors saying they would refer all cleaning/storage business to Arrow.  I always hated walking by the windows of the place with the dying plants and trees just barely clinging to life.  Dead shriveled leaves coated the floor in the storefront.  Blah.

How about a corner deli?

It has always been my hope to see a diner or coffeehouse open in that space. I would love to see historic tax credits used to help renovate that space.

I have often thought Folgers should open a coffee shop downtown.  This would be a perfect spot!

PumpkinStalker, I agree about Folgers. The neighborhood already smells like coffee, and they would benefit from that.

Coffee, please.  I've always been amazed Quality Hill and the Garment District can't support even one coffee house.

Isn't there a coffee house on 8th between Red Dragon and The Phoenix?

Not really a service I would likely ever use but aren't they one of the longer running DT businesses?

Yeah, it's a SOHO Lofts Cafe...never been there.  Cute little place though.

I too can't imagine why a coffee shop couldn't succeed, especially in this nice corner spot with lots of storefront glass.

Yes, Seidens is one of downtown's oldest businesses.

The Soho Lofts coffee place doesn't have enough seating and hours to be the type of coffee house the neighborhood needs.  Seiden's is two-storefronts, and would be perfect.  Plus it's on a prominent corner with traffic.

The other good location would be the New Quality Hill management office on the SE corner of 10th and Broadway.  It has big windows, and two levels (an unfinished basement) and a portico where outdoor seating could be placed.

I have always thought this, too. It's a great idea. Someone please share it with the Folder's folks...

Don't hold your breath with Folgers, but by all means TRY!

Several of us have tried for years (quit about 6 years ago) to convince their management to do something, and a coffee shop was our prime suggestion.

Along with that we suggested a really big steaming coffee cup, or coffee pot, with Folgers on the side, atop their plant as an iconic image of what they are about.  Can't you imagine seeing that as you come across the Broadway Bridge into the city?

That is an excellent idea.  I love roof signs--especially lighted ones. Kansas City used to have so many of them.

I wish there was an arch across Broadway and 5th, and I-670, that said "Welcome to Kansas City"  Sometime like the City Market sign.  Vintage, bulbs, and neon.

The coffee pot on the roof would be iconic like the rocket ship on the old TWA headquarters building.  It would be cool if it was a water storage tank or something.

I wouldn't worry about folgers....I'd get the suggestion to DST as I assume they own the building.

Perhaps it could be part of the 1 percent for art program.

I know it will be a great place for "something else", but this place is a legend in KC's past and present - sad to see it go.

I WANT THAT SIGN THOUGH!!!! If anyone knows what will happen to the sign - let me know!!
Thanks!

They ought to just leave it there, and any new tenant respect it as a part of the landscape.  The City, or Historic Kansas City Foundation, should be buying up these old signs and restoring them and placing them somewhere in a historic sign gallery. It could be along a roadway, on the ASB Bridge, or on the side of some building.

I'd like that too, but aren't you in Kansas City long before that?
